PRESIDENT BUHARI: BEYOND THE IRON AND STEEL

They were called the unsmiling duo. In his first incarnation as Nigerian leader, the then Major General Muhammadu Buhari was paired with another top brass military officer, Babatunde Idiagbon, who was the number two man. Smile was alien to their lips, laughter a total stranger. They had a job to do, which was to rid the country of corruption, crime and indiscipline, and anybody who didn't fall in line was liable to being dealt with. And summarily too. Laughter was, therefore, a distraction.

Buhari was reticent, Idiagbon, taciturn. A fearful and fearsome combination. Do the crime, serve the time was their motto. Manifest indiscipline, even in something as pressing as answering the call of nature, urinate by the roadside, and you can't tell anybody it was the work and of the Devil. They would tell you the Devil does not pee. Vandalize public utilities? Twenty years in jail. Traffic in cocaine? Goodbye to the world. Nigeria was being whipped into line, and no mistake. But that nirvana lasted only 20 months, and forces of reaction struck. The regime was toppled.

Like the MTN slogan, corruption, everywhere you go says Bishop Kukah

Buhari may be impeached for fighting corruption!

Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah
As raw & as straightforward as you can get the truth, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah dished it out today at the platform.

Kukah, spoke Thursday at a talk shop organized by the Platform Nigeria in Lagos to mark Nigeria’s independence.

In his speech, he said: "I believe that Buhari is not a new kid in the block, he's been there before... He fought corruption and lost his job - Napoleon said, "it is religion that stops the poor from killing the rich"

"There is no correlation between human goodness and capacity to govern. and "Nigeria is a country where Hypocrisy is worn as a garment of honour"

"An intellectually lazy nation looks up to a messiah they don't know what he looks like to rescue them. We require a collective courage to say we can't continue like this."

Soyinka @80: What Bishop Kukah Tells Him

        Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese,
Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah
Kukah, who argued Soyinka’s place is already assured among those in the pantheon of the great men and women of letters said, “One last word: Prof, had you listened to your mother, life would have been easier for you. Remember she warned you: ‘Wole, Itirayi ni gbobo nkan.’ Perhaps it is just as well that you did not believe in merely trying for them, you would not have had a Nobel Prize. For a failed trader, failed farmer, a soldier on AWOL, you did well by choosing Literature and Art.

Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah on Friday preached to Prof. Wole Soyinka to “return to the Lord,” as he walks toward the sunset.

Speaking in Abeokuta, Ogun State, during the 17th Wole Soyinka Annual Lecture Series, to coincide with the 80th birthday celebration of the Nobel Laureate, it was an event organized by the National Association of Seadogs.
