Iranian-Backed Houthis Launch Attacks on Saudi Ship, U.N. Facility

(New York, NY) – The Counter Extremism Project (CEP) today issued updated resources on the Iranian-backed Houthis, following attacks the group launched on January 30. A Saudi ship patrolling in the Red Sea was reportedly attacked by three Houthi “suicide gunboats,” killing two crew members and injuring three.

On the same day, a building in southern Saudi Arabia near the Yemeni border used by U.N. staff to monitor ceasefire operations was hit by Katyusha rockets. The Houthis were responsible for rocket attacks on U.S. Naval vessels on October 9 and 12, 2016. While unsuccessful, the attacks led to U.S. retaliatory strikes against the radar installations used to target the ships.

Less than four weeks to the inauguration of the Ondo State governor-elect, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, members of the State Assembly have suspended the Speaker of the House, Jumoke Akindele, and her Deputy, Akin Olotu, over allegation of N15 million fraud.

The suspension of the Speaker was effected by 15 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and five member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) around 6p.m. yesterday at the Assembly Complex along Igbatoro Road, Akure.

Consequently, an Acting Speaker and Deputy Speaker, Malachi Coker and Ayodele Arowele, respectively, were hurriedly elected, while Olamide George was elected as the Majority Leader, as the lawmakers adjourned after the brief sitting.

The ochestrated campaign of the obituary of President Buhari was initiated and publicized by unknown ragtag online portal (can't remember the name now). Since the story went viral, the publisher has since retracted the story and apologized for publishing false story. As expected, some willing evil minded accomplices joined with the initiator of the falsehood to spread the fake news.

Aso Rock brought this upon the Presidency because of being miser with the truth. Why did media aides of Buhari always hide the truth from Nigerians? These fools are too daft to differentiate a public figure - persons elected into public office and people appointed into public office - from a private citizen. Buhari is a public figure. He's the President of 170 million Nigerians. The Aso Rock bunch of idiots don't know how democracy functions. These nonentities aren't smart enough to know that in a democracy, the President as a public man has no privacy at all. Nigerians have the right to probe, scrutinize, and pry into all the corners of Buhari's private life. We have the right to know where he goes for vacation, his health status, what he's doing on vacation, who went with him on vacation, what he eats on vacation, what sports or games he play for relaxation, what books he read, how long he's going to be away, when he'll be back, and so on and so forth. In civilized democracies, the people are supplied with all these information and much more.

Wife of Minsiter of Sports, Solomon Dalung, is dead

Briskila, the first wife of the Minister for Sports, Mr. Solomon Dalung, is dead. She died on Sunday.

Dalung took to his Facebook page to announce the sad story where he also posted the picture of his late wife saying:

Donald Trump made some campaign promises which addressed certain real fears of the American people. Among those fears was the need to deal with terrorism through a pragmatic approach.

Americans saw him as a pragmatic solution to those fears and voted him in. He is now fulfilling those campaign promises. Americans wanted pragmatic solutions. Trump promised it and he is fulfilling it.

APC-Buhari regime: Social consciousness is building at feverish level

The diversion of the whole discourse to herdman-farmer, Christian-Muslim and North-South dichotomies favours the ruling class and their dying regime, as it distracts attention from the regime’s inability to deliver on its promise of change; same inability- like those of the previous regimes-that is at the root of these sectarian crises.

Russian Presiden Putin and American Trump want "real coordination" against Islamic State in Syria as both discussed through phone talks.

President Trump chatted with Vladimir Putin Saturday, his first known conversation since taking office with the Russian leader he frequently complimented on the campaign trail.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer tweeted a photo of Trump on the phone in the Oval Office just after noon Saturday.

“@POTUS is now onto his 3rd of 5 head of government calls, speaking w Russian Pres Putin,” he tweeted.

The Kaduna State Security Council today reviewed the situation in three local government areas that are under curfew. The council noted that the security agencies have taken actions that are preventing attacks, and stabilising the situation in Jema’a, Kaura and Zangon-Kataf local government areas.

The council welcomes the efforts of the security agencies in thwarting attacks and helping to foster a growing sense of safety. However, the council also received reports of a spike in false stories of attacks and killings. These appear tailored to promote panic within communities, create fear and provoke a spiral of reprisals and vengeance.

The Kaduna State Security Council warns that anyone spreading false stories and images of attacks is liable to be prosecuted. If any individual or community is attacked, the correct and lawful procedure is to report to traditional rulers and the police, who have the statutory duty to record the incident, investigate and ascertain its veracity and take steps to establish the identity of victim and perpetrator, amongst others.

The president owes himself an even greater duty – protecting his personal reputation as a fearless anti-corruption crusader. He can only do so when he takes allegations against his friends and staffers seriously and acts. By appearing to refuse to act, the president would be indicting himself in the court of public opinion.

This week, the big story has been that President Muhammadu Buhari has written to the Senate in response to the lawmakers’ indictment of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, and their call for his removal and prosecution. The letter provided an explanation, or rather, some excuses why the president would not act. The letter depicts a very high level of incompetence on the part of whoever wrote it but above all appears to make the argument that the presidential team can engage in corruption without consequence, which is the most direct route for the Buhari presidency to lose its credibility as a bastion of anti-corruption.

Attention of the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), has been drawn to a new tactic being adopted by female suicide bombers in the North East.

Female suicide bombers are now evading detection from security operatives by carrying babies on their back, that ordinarily pass them for innocent nursing mothers.

The two recent suicide bomb attacks in Madagali, Adamawa State are instructive in this regard.

The DHQ wishes to seize this opportunity to appeal to members of the public to be patient and cooperate with the military and other security agencies while carrying out thorough security search and checks as the essence is to nip in the bud the murderous intention of the Boko Haram suicide bombers.

The 22-page 2017 State House Appropriation Bill (alias proposed Aso Rock budget for 2017) is a document that must be read only by the brave and the strong.

No lessons learnt from last year's debacle.
No lessons learnt from all the preceding years combined.

Buhari's Health: FG Urges Nigerians To Disregard Subversive Messages

The Federal Government has urged Nigerians to disregard the subversive messages being circulated via text messaging and the Social Media, saying the fabricated messages are being orchestrated by those who feel threatened by the emerging order.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said there is no iota of truth in the messages being circulated on the health of the President, who is hale and hearty, and the purported emergency meetings of the State Governors in Abuja or anywhere.

It is sad that many people do not get it regarding President Buhari's letter to the Senate on Mr. Babachir Lawal. This isn't about whether the rules of engagement by the Senate and it's recommendations were fair or not. And it is not about whether the report was a minority report or otherwise.
It's about the integrity of the Presidency vis-a-vis the underpinning mission of the Administration itself to rid Nigeria of high level corruption. It is about the person, and inevitably the office, of the SGF having conducted itself in such a manner that, first and foremost, it could be accused of that "grass cutter" heist in the first place. It is about the propriety of key state officials and/or organs of state being found with fingers soiled in oil, even if legally explicable. Not all legal validation amounts to moral solidity. That is where the President misstepped. Much has been preached to the Presidency about symbolism and optics. If your sole mission is to fight corruption, then the mere appearance of possible corruption should be offensive to your office. Your credo should be that "there would be no corruption and there would be no appearance of corruption".

The attention of the Nigerian Army has been drawn to erroneous impressions and insinuations on a libel case against the Premium Times to whip up sentiments .

Therefore, we wish to clarify that the issue at hand is purely allegation of libel in which Premium Times falsely and unjustifiably accused the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai, of false declaration of assets, owning mansions and estates in Dubai and further stated that he was being investigated by Code of Conduct Bureau for false declaration of assets in their publication of 12th December 2015.

Consequently, concerted efforts were made to make Premium Times retract the story and apologize, to no avail. As a law-abiding citizen, he took appropriate legal steps of seeking redress through the courts.

Terrorism: UN Security Council To Multinational Joint Task Force - Prevent Boko Haram From Regrouping

---Calls on International Mommunity to Provide Urgent Humanitarian Assistance for the People Affected by the Crisis

The UN Security Council has tasked the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) to prevent the destructive Boko Haram insurgents, recently dislodged from its safe haven in Sambisa Forest, from regrouping.

The task force was set up by Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon, Niger and the Republic of Benin to tackle Boko Haram insurgents. The Security Council, in a Presidential Statement, reiterated that terrorism should be combated in all forms to prevent its spread.

“The Council urged the Multinational Joint Task Force participating countries to further enhance regional military cooperation and coordination. The Force should deny safe haven to Boko Haram, and facilitate the restoration of civilian security and the rule of law in areas liberated from the militant group.”

Economic Community of Waest African States (ECOWAS) coalition forces who have been on stand by in Senegal have moved into Gambia with a view to securing strategic positions.

Ecomog Force commander, Air Commodore Tajjudeen Yusuf confirmed that the troops met no resistance as they moved into the country. The Gambian security forces are said to have rather been friendly and welcoming.

The Nigerian air-force also conducted armed Reece of the the country from the base in Dakar Senegal without any hindrance. Correspondent Macham reports that the troops are expected to prepare the grounds for the return of president ADAMA BARROW to the country.

As the Buhari administration proceeds with the implementation of its Social Investment Programmes, the Federal Government has now released over N375 million this year to feed almost 700,000 primary school pupils in 5 states, while virtually all States of the federation, except two, are now being processed for the payment of N30,000 monthly Stipends to 200,000 graduates, the N-Power Beneficiaries.

Giving a Media Update in Abuja on Sunday, the Senior Special Assistant on Media & Publicity to the President, Office of the Vice President, Mr. Laolu Akande said the Buhari Social Investment Programmes, SIP, are proceeding at different stages of implementation.

According to him, regarding the Homegrown School Feeding Programme, the Federal Government last week released money for this year, to the States of Anambra, Ogun, Oyo, Osun and Ebonyi to cover the feeding for 10 school days.

The Rivers State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has congratulated the Federal Government and the Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, on the impending commencement of the Lagos - Ibadan and Lagos - Calabar railway projects. The commendation was contained in a statement issued on Sunday in Port Harcourt, signed by the State Chairman, Chief (Dr.) Davies Ibiamu Ikanya.

“With the commencement of work on the N458bn Lagos - Ibadan new rail project by February 2017, the Federal Government under the watch of President Muhmmadu Buhari has once again demonstrated that governance is all about providing good life for its citizenry,” the party said.

FG adopts 16-point demand on Niger Delta as working document to resolve the crisis in the oil-rich region

The Federal Government may have adopted the 16-point demand presented by Niger Delta leaders, under the aegis of Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), as working document to resolve the crisis in the oil-rich region, according to PANDEF.

PANDEF leaders hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for the step.

The leaders hinted, yesterday, that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo spoke about Federal Government’s favourable disposition to the 16-point demand being adopted as working document to end the Niger Delta crisis when he led a high-powered delegation to the region last week, beginning with Delta State.

Osinbajo is expected to visit two other Niger Delta states – Rivers and Akwa Ibom – as part of the peace shuttle to the region.

Before he proceeded on a short vacation last week, President Muhammadu Buhari had felicitated with China on its Lunar New Year, which begins on January 28. Here is the text of the message:

Message from President Muhammadu Buhari for the Chinese Lunar New Year

The Year of Rooster for the celebration of the Chinese Community in Nigeria and all over the world will commence on 28 January this year. As you spend the next days sharing time with families and friends, on behalf of the Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I want to express my warmest greetings to you on celebrating the Spring Festival, also known as Chinese Lunar New Year.

Following the Decision of the Summit of the ECOWAS Authority taken on 17th December 2016 in Abuja, Nigeria, Mediation efforts, including visits to Banjul, were undertaken by the Chair of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, HE President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the Mediator, HE President Muhammadu Buhari and Co-Mediator on The Gambia, HE former President John Dramani Mahama, along with HE President Ernest Bai Koroma to mediate on the political impasse with Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr. Yahya A. Following further mediation efforts by HE President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania and HE President Alpha Conde of the Republic of Guinea Conakry with HE Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr. Yahya A. J. J. Jammeh, the former President of the Republic of The Gambia, and in consultation with the Chairperson of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, the Chairperson of the AU Authority of Heads of State and Government and the Secretary-General of the United Nations, this declaration is made with the purpose of reaching a peaceful resolution to the political situation in The Gambia.

The Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, has pledged to turn the ancient city into a tourism haven to boost its economy and occupy its pride of place. Ogunwusi, represented by Comrade Moses Olafare, the Director of Media and Public Affairs to the Ooni, at a news briefing held in his office within the palace in Ile-Ife on Friday.

Comrade Olafare said that Ile-Ife is a land of expansion and a sacred town globally known as the source of the Oduduwa race.“The town is known for its peaceful nature, accommodating to visitors and tourists, and home to 201 Yoruba deities,’’ he said.

He said that there were several historical monuments and sites in the ancient city that when developed into international standard, millions of local and foreign tourists and visitors would like to visit having read about them in history books in the past.

The presidency has denied a report by some media that President Muhammadu Buhari, who is holidaying abroad is dead.

An Unconfirmed reports has it that Yahya Abdul-Aziz Jemus Junkung Jammeh with his familly has departed The Gambia to Guinea

The recently inaugurated president of The Gambia, Adama Barrow, has revealed he will be ruling the country from his hide out in Dakar, Senegal until he gets security clearance from ECOWAS. He was sworn into office on Thursday at the Gambian Embassy in Dakar as Yahya Jammeh refused to relinquish power after losing elections in December.

Jammeh cites irregularities during the electoral process in December.

Mr Barrow, a political novice, won the elections to end the over two-decades-old grip on power by Mr Jammeh. Since the announcement by the country's electoral commission, Mr Jammeh has sought to use various means to extend his rule, calling for fresh elections at some point.

"I have decided today in good conscience to relinquish the mantle of leadership of this great nation," Jammeh said on state television, wearing a white robe and looking tired.

Yahya Jammeh, who led his country for 22 years but refused to accept his election defeat to new President Adama Barrow last month, has agreed to step down and go into exile. He said his decision was taken in the national interest after prayer and said he was proud to have served the Gambian people, imploring them to work together as one nation.

It has not been specified where Mr Jammeh would go into exile.

The news came as regional armies, who entered Gambian territory late on Thursday, were poised to remove Mr Jammeh by force just hours after the army chief recognised Mr Barrow as commander-in-chief.

Dutch public prosecutors and the tax inspection agency are ramping up their fight against bitcoin money laundering this year.

According to research conducted by Dutch financial newspaper Het Financieel Dagblad (FD), at least three criminal cases pertaining to money laundering with bitcoin are scheduled for 2017. Additionally, the FIOD — the investigative arm of the Dutch tax authority — wants to lower the bar for prosecution of unlicensed bitcoin traders. The FIOD will also try to have mixing services recognized as money-laundering operations.

The Challenge of Anonymity

When Donald Trump won the presidential election in November, the price of bitcoin jumped. Following his inauguration today – not so much.

On 9th November, prices bounced more than 3% as Trump, the controversial businessman and Republican presidential nominee, secured the votes to clinch the election versus former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton. That move came as stock markets worldwide sharply fell as Trump's victory became apparent.

The reaction to Trump's inauguration, by contrast, was far more muted.
