The Uruguay players remain on the pitch after the final whistle to celebrate with their fans. After their calamitous opening defeat to Costa Rica, it's quite a turnaround. There's one man who can take a large portion of the credit: Luis Suarez.

For England it was all in vain. Wayne Rooney’s first goal, the mighty effort in Manaus – almost certainly it ends here. England will need to be the first team in World Cup history to lose their opening two games and go through, if they are to qualify from here.

That isn’t going to happen. It won’t happen, most likely, because there is no guarantee England can win, even against Costa Rica, with a defence that cannot be trusted, not even for five minutes.

That was how long remained when Luis Suarez struck, a second time. It was a goal of almost agricultural quality. A long kick upfield by goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, perhaps glancing the header of captain Steven Gerrard, inexplicably catching Gary Cahill unaware.

Brazil World Cup: Wayne Rooney hopes partner Daniel Sturridge for England

Wayne Rooney hopes to strike up a partnership with Daniel Sturridge that emulates his England colleague’s club success with Luis Suarez.

Rooney believes Suarez and Sturridge were the best front pair in the Premier League last season(external) as they fired Liverpool into title contention. Now he wants to play the Uruguayan’s role with Sturridge for England.

“It’s easier at a club but we have had time to work on stuff. Hopefully we’ll see the benefits of that,” said Rooney. “Suarez and Sturridge have certainly been the best two front men in the Premier League this season.

Last game: Giggs want a home win against Hull

The Manchester United Interim coach, Ryan Giggs wants a win against the Hull city in their last game of the season after he has suffered his first defeat as interim manager on Saturday as Sebastian Larsson's first half goal helped Sunderland clinch a 1-0 win that all-but secures their Premier League survival.

Manchester United's 4-0 Norwich, Giggs very delighted for the Reds victory

Interim manager, Ryan Giggs was delighted to oversee Manchester United's 4-0 victory over Norwich on Saturday, his first as acting manager.

After the victory of the visitor, Giggs said walking out at Old Trafford in this new capacity made him feel "10 feet tall". "I was nervous, but as soon as I came out of the tunnel the reception I got, the staff got and the players got was brilliant," he told MUTV. "I've got to thank the fans for that because it’s not been an easy week, but I felt ten feet tall."

Goals from Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata handed United the win, although the Reds were frustrated for the majority of the first half. Giggs says he encouraged attacking football at the break, and was full of praise for the response shown in the second period. “We looked like scoring goals and creating chances," he told Sky Sports. "In the first half, we were a little bit slow, so I just reminded the players that the tempo needed to be quicker and they reacted well to that.

“They’re all good players and all of us have let ourselves down this year. We haven’t played to the level that we’re capable of this season, but we did that today. I said yesterday that it can’t just be for one game, it has to be for longer than that. Every time you play for Manchester United you have to stay at that level, and they have to keep to these standards against Sunderland.
