Nigerian Senate passes a Bill to Criminalize Sexual Harassment in Nigerian Universities for its Second Reading

The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday passed a Bill to Criminalize Sexual Harassment in Nigerian Universities for its Second Reading.

Many young Nigerian boys and girls suffer at the hands of lecturers, fellow students and those in administrative positions of power when they seek to further their education in our universities.

This bill, once passed and signed into law, will help stamp out all forms of harassment to make our schools more conducive for our students.


According to the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki said: "I can attest to the fact that I have received anonymous emails and messages urging the Senate to make sexual harassment in our universities a criminal offence. In this regard, as we have taken this pivotal step to get this bill off the ground, I enjoin members of the civil society and students across the country to join in the process to make sure that this bill is passed and signed, so that students can receive the protection and backing of the law as they pursue their education."

Sacking 153 Lecturers: NUC Withdraw ESUT Accreditation

The Nigeria University Commission (NUC) has withdraws accreditation to the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Enugu for alleged disengagement of about 153 of its lecturers.
It was learnt that the affected university teachers were sacked by ESUT authorities shortly after using them to scale last accreditation exercise of some of its faculties/departments.

Confirming the withdrawal of the accreditation of faculties/departments earlier given to ESUT authorities on Tuesday, the Director of Information and Public Relations of the NUC, Mallam Ibrahim Yakassai, said that the NUC under the Executive Secretary, Professor Julius Okojie frowned at a situation where some universities hired and sacked lecturers immediately after using them (lecturers) to get accreditation from the Commission.
