PRESS RELEASE: Magu’s Non-Confirmation: Civil Society Raises Concerns

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), Transparency International-Nigeria (TI) and Zero-corruption Coalition (ZCC) expresses concern at the circumstances surrounding the non-conformation by the Nigerian Senate of Ibrahim Magu as the Chairman of Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), upon his appointment by the President.
We find it worrisome that the confirmation of the head of such a strategic anti-corruption agency is taking so such a long time, having been first appointed in November 2015, and worse still at a time when the nation is reinvigorating the fight against corruption. CISLAC, TI- Nigeria and ZCC wonders if there is more to the unfolding events than meets the eyes.

This rehash of the prominent positions held by Muslims in Nigeria is mischievous and quite unfortunate. It is the typical Nigerian game of chasing needless shadows rather than focusing on the arduous task of nation building.
Until recently, so-called Christians held commanding heights of the economic governance of our Republic. The Presidency, Headship of National Assembly, Secretary of Govt of the Federation, Head of Service, Ministry of Works, Ministry of Finance, the Central Bank, the NNPC, the Stock Exchange etc were headed by so-called Christians. Tragically, they reprobately superintended the profligate looting of our common patrimony. The lone voice of courageous warning belonged to a certified Muslim, Sanusi Lamido, who succeeded Soludo and was hounded for his courage to expose the cult of looters comprising so-called Christians.

IS IT HARD FOR THEM TO EMULATE PMB?

A Biafran lawyer recently sued President Muhammadu Buhari over his WAEC school certificate, probably thinking that the President forged his WAEC like they do in Biafra. The President did not go about shouting or wailing or screaming that he has immunity from prosecution, instead he got himself some lawyers to handle the issue in court!

But what do we have from the troika of the Fayoses, Sarakis and Ekweremadus? One is claiming immunity for his bank accounts while one is hallucinating about some cabal hijacking the Presidency as if we didn't know that he leads a cabal that has hijacked Kwara State for donkey years and also wants to hijack the Nigerian Senate, and the other is now busy writing foreign embassies and even the UN, claiming that President Buhari wants to silence him, and I surmise that he has forgotten that in those countries to which he is writing letters, crooks and forgers don't lead their Senates; in fact, they are arrested with handcuffs!

Abuja, Nigeria, June 27---Today we the leaders of the Nigerian Senate reiterate our innocence against the charges filed by the Attorney General of the Federal Government of Nigeria at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court on the allegations of forgery of the Senate Standing Rules document.

In our view, the charges filed by the Attorney General represent a violation of the principle of the Separation of Powers between the Executive Branch and the Legislative Branch as enshrined in our Constitution. Furthermore, it is farcical to allege that a criminal act occurred during Senate procedural actions and the mere suggestion demonstrates a desperate overreach by the office of the Attorney General. These trumped up charges is only another phase in the relentless persecution of the leadership of the Senate

This misguided action by the Attorney General begs the question, how does this promote the public interest and benefit the nation? At a time when the whole of government should be working together to meet Nigeria’s many challenges, we are once again distracted by the Executive Branch’s inability to move beyond a leadership election among Senate peers. It was not an election of Senate peers and Executive Branch participants.

The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday resolved to sommon the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Babachir Lawal to appear before its Committee on Foreign Affairs following an alledge irregularities and discrepancies in the Ambassadorial Nominees submited to the upper legislative chamber for screenig and cconfirmations

According to the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki,; "Following reported discrepancies and the lack of state representational spread in the names of Ambassadorial nominees submitted to the Senate for consideration, today, the Senate resolved to summon the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to appear before it to explain the purported irregularities in the list."

"It is important that we address the issues surrounding this list before the screening of Ambassadors commences."

Nigerian Senate passes a Bill to Criminalize Sexual Harassment in Nigerian Universities for its Second Reading

The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday passed a Bill to Criminalize Sexual Harassment in Nigerian Universities for its Second Reading.

Many young Nigerian boys and girls suffer at the hands of lecturers, fellow students and those in administrative positions of power when they seek to further their education in our universities.

This bill, once passed and signed into law, will help stamp out all forms of harassment to make our schools more conducive for our students.


According to the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki said: "I can attest to the fact that I have received anonymous emails and messages urging the Senate to make sexual harassment in our universities a criminal offence. In this regard, as we have taken this pivotal step to get this bill off the ground, I enjoin members of the civil society and students across the country to join in the process to make sure that this bill is passed and signed, so that students can receive the protection and backing of the law as they pursue their education."

Nigerian Senate to launch transparency and delivery commission

The Nigerian Senate is to inaugurate an independent Transparency and Delivery Commission (TDC), as part of measures to review and improve the oversight systems and tools of the Senate.

The measures which was in line with the Legislative Agenda approved by the Senate, was announced by the President of the Senate Dr. Bukola Saraki, according to a statement issued by his Special Adviser (Media and Communication), Yusuph Olaniyonu.

Olaniyonu disclosed in the statement that the Commission would be led by a working group consisting of a world leading research institution and a partner institute in Nigeria with an internationally acclaimed anti-corruption expert acting as the advisor.

Senate President Saraki Blast Political Cabals, Commends Buhari For Non-interference

The embattled president of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Bukola saraki has insisted that he will stand strong in the face of persecution and calling on other lawmakers to stand with him in defence of the legislature.

Saraki stated this during a welcome address to senators while making reference to his trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, reiterating on his submission to rule of law and said that he was been tried because he became the senate president “against the wishes of some political cabal”

Senate President also stated that the laws of Nigeria does not consider any external influence within the legislature while commending President Muhammadu Buhari for refusing to intervene in the politics of the national assembly

Trafficking in persons, 7 years in prison for offenders - Senate passed the bill

The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday passed a bill prohibiting trafficking in persons which stipulated stiffer penalties for offenders.

The clause by clause consideration of the report of the Senate Joint Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters; and Women Affairs and Youth Development on the bill, "The Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Bill" seeks to repeal and amend the "Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Law Enforcement and Administration Act of 2003."
