Nigerian Senate to launch transparency and delivery commission

The Nigerian Senate is to inaugurate an independent Transparency and Delivery Commission (TDC), as part of measures to review and improve the oversight systems and tools of the Senate.

The measures which was in line with the Legislative Agenda approved by the Senate, was announced by the President of the Senate Dr. Bukola Saraki, according to a statement issued by his Special Adviser (Media and Communication), Yusuph Olaniyonu.

Olaniyonu disclosed in the statement that the Commission would be led by a working group consisting of a world leading research institution and a partner institute in Nigeria with an internationally acclaimed anti-corruption expert acting as the advisor.

Introduction

I would like to start by welcoming you all to the National Assembly, this great citadel of our democracy, for this important dialogue session with representatives of students of our universities in Nigeria.

Today's novel event presents a unique opportunity for students from Universities across Nigeria to visit the National Assembly as part of a special youth development program. This initiative is the first of its kind in Nigeria and it focuses on deepening students understanding of the democratic process with special emphasis on the legislature while attempting to bridge the prevalent disconnect students have with the system.

The core objectives of this event therefore, include: to expose students to legislative practice and procedure; improve public trust in the Legislature as an arm of government; and enable students to meet and interact with their elected representatives in the National Assembly.

Sectoral Debate and Youth Inclusion: Dogara to Engage with 161 Nigerian University Students in Abuja

In an unprecedented move aimed at broadening the understanding of Nigerian students and setting the records straight for them to understand the workings of the institution of the legislature and how it functions, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon Yakubu Dogara, will meet with 161 students from all 141 public and private universities across the country to interact with them.

The event, which will be done over a two day period, is in fulfillment of the Speaker’s promise to promote youth inclusion in governance and encourage their active participation in democracy. The dialogue is also aimed at exposing stereotypes that have constantly pitched the people against the National Assembly due to general misconception and misunderstanding of the legislature as a result of prolonged military rule in Nigeria.

Saraki Calls for Citizens' Participation in the Formulation of Legislative Agenda for the 8th Senate

The Nigerian Senate President, Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki has called for the Nigerian citizens to join and participate in the formulation of the legislative agenda for the 8th Nigeria's senate.

Senate President made the call following several requests by Nigerians on social media regarding legislation they would want amended or introduced in the 8th Senate.


Saraki through his Facebook page said the contributions of all Nigerians will be crucial to ensuring that bills passed into law from now till 2019 will have direct and positive consequences on the lives of our people.He enjoin Nigerians to forward their contributions to spass.legal@gmail.com including their name, phone number and location.
