Senate Passes Motion on the Non-Payment of Teacher’s Salaries, Prioritised it as public security spending

According to the Nigerian Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki, in many States of the Federation, for upwards of 5 months, teachers have not been paid. This is why today, the Senate passed a Motion on the Non-Payment of Teacher’s Salaries Across the Country.

"The Senate expressed its disturbance about the fact that due to the severe economic downturn across the nation, the welfare of many of our teachers have been neglected. This situation, if not addressed, can lead to the mass exodus of our teachers from the educational sector - which would in turn create a situation whereby there will be fewer teachers in our classrooms to attend to our children."

Gender Equality Opportunity (GEO) Bill: Senate Committed To Women Empowerment, Says Saraki

Nigerian Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, on Thursday reiterated the commitment of the 8th Senate towards the advancement and empowerment of women in all spheres of the country.

Saraki, according to a statement by his Special Assistant on Gender Advocacy, Fatima Kakuri, said the red chamber will also ensure the eradication of all discrimination against women through the Gender Equality Opportunity (GEO) Bill now being considered by the lawmakers.

The statement reads in part: "The Gender Equality Opportunity (GEO) Bill , which initially suffered some set back at its second reading has been reworked to reflect the broader views that were hitherto not accommodated and submitted to the Senate President. As promised earlier by Senate President, we are glad to announce to the public that the bill was formally presented and scaled first reading on the floor of the Senate.

Saraki Seeks Eradication Of Child Labour

Nigerian Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, on Sunday called for eradication of Child Labour as part of activities marking this year's World Day Against Child Labour with the theme: "End child labour from the supply chain".

Saraki in a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Gender Advocacy, Fatima Kakuri, urged all stakeholders to work towards bequeathing a future devoid of child and all other forms of inhuman practices against children.

Saraki Mourns Amodu Shuaibu

The Nigerian Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, on Saturday expressed grief over the death of a former boss of the Super Eagles, Coach Amodu Shuaibu and said it is yet another colossal national loss.

Saraki in a statement by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, commiserated with the immediate family of the late Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) over the unfortunate incident.

He described the incident as particularly sad coming barely 72 hours after the country lost another national sports hero, Coach Stephen Keshi.

Saraki Says Democracy Remains Best Solution to our National Problems

The Nigerian Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki has commended Nigerians for working to sustain democracy in the past 17 years despite the various challenges the country has encountered within the period.
In a statement to mark this year's Democracy Day, signed on his behalf by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, Saraki described democracy as not only the most globally accepted system of government but also the best solution to the problems confronting a multi-cultural, multi-lingual and multi-religious society like Nigeria.

He said in the last 17 years, the electorate have become more discerning and sophisticated as the nation has got to the point that people elected to the various offices are now conscious of the fact that they are under constant watch and when they fail to meet the expectation of the voters, they will be given the red card.

The Nigerian Senate President, Dr. Olubukola Abubakar Saraki has congratulated the Nigerian Children on this occassion of Children's Day Celebration.

Senator Saraki who met with different catigories of the Nigerian children and youths at the National Assembly in Abuja congratulates them as the future leaders and hope of Nigeria's tomorrow.

PANAMA PAPERS: AU CALLS FOR INVESTIGATIONS

The African Union (AU) has called on all African countries to investigate persons and companies implicated in the Panama Papers leak.

Scores of high-profile Africans —including the nephew of South African President Jacob Zuma and the Nigerian Senate president, Bukola Saraki— have come under scrutiny after being linked to offshore accounts and shell companies in the leak of 11.5 million tax documents from Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca. South Africa’s Finance Minister, Pravin Gordhan, has ordered an investigation into citizens of the country named in the Panama Papers, but other African countries have been slower to respond.

Former South African President Thabo Mbeki, who heads up the AU’s panel on illicit financial flows, issued a statement on Friday referring to the leak as “most welcome” and calling for concerted action across Africa and the world to tackle illicit forms of tax evasion. Mbeki pointed out that the fourth most-used tax haven revealed within the Panama Papers was an African nation—the Seychelles—and said this meant that African countries “must not rest under the illusion that the issue of tax havens does not directly affect Africa.”

Stop My Trial At the Code Of Conduct Tribunal, Saraki Prays To The Supreme Court

Nigerian Senate president, Sen. Bukola Saraki, has appealed to the Supreme Court of Nigeria to halt his trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

Saraki's  appeal to Supreme Court  was as a result of the Court of Appeal's dismissal of his objection to the trial by the Code Conduct Tribunal on the charges against him by the Code of Conduct Bureau over allegations of  false assets declaration and corruption

Last week, the  Appeal Court in Abuja dismissed Mr. Saraki’s objection to the trial, affirming the powers of the tribunal to hear a 13-count charge of alleged falsification of his assets declaration and corruption brought by the Code of Conduct Bureau against the senate president.

Saraki Calls for Citizens' Participation in the Formulation of Legislative Agenda for the 8th Senate

The Nigerian Senate President, Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki has called for the Nigerian citizens to join and participate in the formulation of the legislative agenda for the 8th Nigeria's senate.

Senate President made the call following several requests by Nigerians on social media regarding legislation they would want amended or introduced in the 8th Senate.

Senate President To Read Ministerial List Tuesday

Nigerian Senate President, Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki this evening (30th Sep. 2015)  received the list of Ministerial nominees sent to the Senate for screening by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The list was submitted in a sealed envelope by Chief of Staff to the President, Alhaji Abba Kyari and Senator Ita Enang, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Legislative Matters (Senate).

Dr. Saraki has, following the tradition of the Senate, decided that the envelope will remain sealed till Tuesday October 6, when during the plenary sitting of the Upper legislative chamber, it will be opened and the list read to Senators.
