Forgery Suit: Senate issues fresh summon on AGF - Punch

The Senate, through its committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, on Tuesday, issued a fresh summon to the Attorney – General of the Federation, who is also the Minister of Justice, Mallam Abubakar Malami.

Malami was being invited by the senate for instituting a forgery case against the presiding officers of the upper chamber, and two top management staff of the National Assembly.


The senate had first summoned Malami, following a motion moved by Senator Dino Melaye, representing Kogi West Senatorial District, who relied on order 14 and 52, to demand the approval of his colleagues for his two prayers including the invitation of the AGF and the genuineness of the rule book.

Ccorruption Scourge: Magu Thumbs Up NAJUC For Initiative In Organizing An Event To Discuss Fight Against Corruption

The Acting Chairman of EFCC, Ibrahim Mustapha Magu has thumbs up for the National Association of Judicial Correspondents (NAJUC) Lagos State Chapter for the initiative in organizing an event tailored to discuss the corruption scourge bedeviling the nation and truncating its growth and development. 

Magu made the commendation at the 2016 Annual Lecture and Media Award Ceremony which took place at the Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos.

Senator Saraki who met with different catigories of the Nigerian children and youths at the National Assembly in Abuja congratulates them as the future leaders and hope of Nigeria's tomorrow.

BUHARI’S CHANGE AND THE PDP ENCULTURATED CIVIL SERVICE

Indeed 16 years is a long time in the life of a nation. You can transform a nation in 16 years but it can take a lesser time to destroy it. Nations cities like Singapore and Dubai were transformed within 15 years. Singapore was a poor nation and Dubai was only a desert 17 years ago. But you can imagine the amazing transformation they have gone through in 16 last years.

But while these nations were being transformed, Nigeria in the last 15 years was being destroyed by a group of money and material thirsty criminals who not only plundered its wealth but also destroyed the institutional fabrics required for nation’s development. About a 90 percent of those who governed Nigeria at various levels in the last 16 years under the PDP acted like vampires. If you seat to think of what they did to Nigeria, you will surely cry.

2016Budget Issues to be Resolved Soon, we have arrived at a decision Says Speaker Dogara

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon Yakubu Dogara, has said the National Assembly and the Executive are likely to resolve issues surrounding the 2016 budget very soon.

Dogara, who made this known when he received a delegation of All Progressives Congress elders and stakeholders from Kwande/Oshongo federal constituency of Benue State in the National Assembly, 

He also stated that the executive and the parliament will not have any fight over their differences arising from the 2016 budget as passed by the National Assembly.

He stated: “We know that our people cannot wait forever for the budget and as a responsible government, we cannot afford to go to sleep on this."

Should the Supreme Court Regulate the Work of the National Assembly?

"Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe is reported to have stated that: The Supreme Court is wrong. The law does not allow one arm of the government to stop another arm of government from performing its duties.The Supreme Court cannot stop us from legislating and if they say that the Supreme Court should stopp us from making laws, it is misleading and it amounts to misreading the powers of the Supreme Court,”

Really, no court has such power to stop the legislature from performing its functions or hold it down for the mr. president or the excecutive arm of the government. Only that if the actions or the law made by the legislature are not inline with the provisions of the counstitution can the Judiciary declear such as null and void but not that the body should stop performing any of its mandated constitunational duties pending the determination of any case before the court or supreme court wahtsoever.

The Nigerian courts must stop taking any case, which pits the judiciary against the constitutional powers of the legislature. The courts, including the Supreme Court are treading on very dangerous territory, when they presume to regulate the legislative authority of the National Assembly.

1993 was an important reference point in our politics, our efforts at unity, our evolution and integration – in short our history. The bells of 1993 are still ringing. We lost a historic great opportunity to do the right thing for the peace and harmony of the nation.

The main purpose of this gathering, I believe, is to soberly recall and reconsider the events of 12 June, 1993 and their aftermath. When we are able to learn the correct lessons of those turbulent days, we must then resolve never to repeat those mistakes. We need not further dwell on who or what was responsible or apportion blame or who won and who lost. The whole country lost. Nobody won. The past is prologue.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday alleged the dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram, had infiltrated his government.

He claimed some of members of the group, which had claimed responsibility for the killings in parts of the North, were in the executive, legislative and judiciary arms of government as well as the police and armed forces.

Jonathan spoke during an inter-denominational service to mark the 2012 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.

He said the situation had made it more difficult to combat Boko Haram.

The President described the current security situation in the country as worse than the civil war experience.

He said, “This is a particular time when the country has major security challenges. There are explosions every day, people are dying and are being killed daily without any reason.
