The President of the Nigerian Senate, Dr. Olubukola Abubakar Saraki has congratulates the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) saying the Midwives has greatlt helped to improve the maternal healt of the women in Nigeria.
"As a medical doctor by profession, I personally appreciate the contributions of Midwives in saving lives. Over the years, Midwives have helped to improve the maternal health of the Nigerian woman.
According to available data, the risk of a woman dying as a result of pregnancy or childbirth in Nigeria is still high compared to developed Nations."
The Senate President, while declearing the program open said: "As we declare the inaugural international Midwifery Conference in Abuja open, the 8th Assembly under my watch will partner with these organizations and others to provide legislation that will help to strengthen the efforts of Midwives in Nigeria to enable them provide better support for expecting mothers and also to other health practitioners."
International Day of the Midwife was first celebrated May 5, 1991, and has since been observed in over 50 nations around the world.
The idea of having a day to recognize and honor midwives came out of the 1987 International Confederation of Midwives conference in the Netherlands. In 2014 it was celebrated in Iran and New Zealand among other places.
