Speaker Dogara tasks Chinese firms on diligent execution of contracts

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara has tasked Chinese firms to ensure diligent execution of projects according to contracts agreements and specifications.

Dogara made the call when the Vice President, Public Relations and Government Affairs of Huawei Technologies Nigeria Limited, Wakie Wu, called on him in his office in Abuja on Thursday.

“One thing that we have to take home from this brief interaction is that it is always important that whatever agreement we have, whatever contracts, whatever partnership that we are having, produces value–something that we can put on the table.
“And I know that with the reputation that you have; I saw that you are spread across all the continents of the world, that you will help us in this discussion about projects that are being given but not fully executed for the benefits of teeming populace of Nigeria .

“I believe that you have the golden opportunity to lead in that direction and to show that yes, whatever commitment we are having with any corporate entity from China can be delivered hundred per cent.

“I sincerely believe that you will enjoy the support of the National Assembly as a whole, not just the House of Representatives because of our drive to attract foreign direct investment.

The Speaker called on the company executives that if they have issues with the laws of Nigeria in regards to business that they want the NASS to step into, they should feel free to bring their suggestions.

He said the present administration in Nigeria was taking measures to combat corruption as well as reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks in the running of business and doing business transactions in the country.

“It is hoped that by the time we reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks and we are able to deal with corruption, the way we should as a country a lot of investors will make Nigeria the first destination of choice.

“And that is an effort that this present government is currently engaged in”, Dogara said.

The Speaker said that in the course of the sectoral debates by the House, the issue of expansion of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) to generate revenue was raised.

While commending the Chinese company for its social responsibility to their host communities across the globe, the Speaker called on them to extend their social responsibility gesture to the internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the North East of the country.

Speaking earlier, the Vice President, Public Relations and Governmental Affairs of the company told the Speaker that the company had trained about 20,000 Nigerian youths on ICT and that another memorandum of understanding had been signed with the Federal Government for another round of training for 2,000 students.

According to Wu, the firm has also donated ICT laboratories to some schools in the country as part of its social responsibility efforts.
