Ladies and Gentlemen, it is my pleasure this afternoon to welcome you all to Headquarters Theatre Command in order to update you with the progress of Operation LAFIYA DOLE. The gallant troops have continued to consolidate the peace. This brief, therefore, will touch on some of the operations and other related issues.

Giwa Military barracks 'a place of death' says Amnesty

Amnesty International says at least 149 detainees have died "in horrendous conditions" at a military detention centre in north-east Nigeria this year.

In a report, Amnesty says 11 of those who died at the Giwa barracks were young children, including four babies.

It called the centre "a place of death" and said it should be closed.

The BBC's Abdullahi Kaura Abubakar in Abuja says it is latest in a series of damning reports on the Nigerian military's treatment of suspects.

The army has not commented on the latest report but has previously said it has set up a human rights department to check claims of abuse.

Nigerian Army denies killing 350 Shi’ite members, charges Amnesty International to provide evidence

The Spokesman of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Rabe Abubakar has denied reports by the Amnesty International that soldiers killed several Shiite members during a clash between the army and members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, IMN, also known as the Shiite sect.

The military, which has been repeatedly accused of abuses against civilians in its fight against Muslim jihadists, Boko Haram, has maintained its troops acted appropriately.

Abubakar described the report by Amnesty International as “unfair,” stressing that the Nigerian military was not consulted before such publication was carried out.

Now the International community via series of events and policy statements had rollout series of reports indicting all security institutions in Nigeria of being used by the ruling Government to subvert the will and positions of those who chooses the right of self-determination, rejecting their continuous staying in an unholy marriage created by foreigners and where their lives is endangered and cheated and their natural resources stolen by laws they were never parts of the making via non-conduct of a national referendum to give the social contracts sane credibility.

Torture increasing in Nigeria, Iraq and Libya— Amnesty International

Amnesty International has said torture and other forms of cruelty are on the rise in Nigeria, Iraq and Libya, with attitudes to torture appearing to grow passive.

AI has serious concerns about the increasing use of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment in Nigeria.

Recent Amnesty research indicates that police and military personnel routinely use torture and other ill-treatment to extract information and “confessions”, and to punish and exhaust detainees. In contravention of national and international law, information extracted by torture and ill-treatment is routinely accepted as evidence in court. 

Amnesty Reports unfounded - Defence Headquarters

The Nigerian military on Friday said a report by Amnesty International, AI, on the abducted Chibok schoolgirls was false. The global human rights organisation had released a report on Friday indicting the Nigerian military for the kidnap of over 250 girls from the Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, on April 14.

AI said the military had at least 4-hour prior warning of the Chibok attack, but did not do enough to stop it. According to AI’s report, sources said that local patrols (known as “vigilantes”, set up by the military and local authorities) in Gagilam, a neighbouring village, were among the first to raise the alarm on the evening of 14 April.‬

‪The locals, the report said, raised the alarm after a large group of unidentified armed men entered their village on motorbikes and said they were headed to Chibok.‬

When asked by the ABC news America to respond to some questions on the Boko Haram Abducted Chibok schoolgirls, the minister said she is tired of the same story.

She said the government is doing all it could to bring the girls back safely.

Fears of Boko Haram Raids; Borno State Closes Schools

As the Boko Haram attacks continue despite the state of emergency rule in the three north-eastern states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa, imposed by the Nigerian president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, the Borno state government has closed schools because of fears of attacks by the Islamist militant group, also known as Boko Haram, which Amnesty International said killed at least 170 students and teachers last year.
