United States to pump $1 billion into Nigeria’s power sector

Power Africa, an initiative by the US government to light up Africa, on Tuesday said it was planning to invest about one billion dollars on the power sector in Nigeria, the programme’s coordinator, Mr Andrew Herscowitz said. Herscowitz announced this in Abuja at a news conference on strengthening the power sector in Nigeria.


The coordinator, who said U.S. was committed to strengthening the power sector in Nigeria, added that America has already committed billions of dollars in funding the nation’s energy projects.

Attempted Rape; United States cancels visas of Nigerians lawmakers who patronized prostitutes

The US embassy has reportedly cancelled the visas of three members of the House of Representatives to the country. The affected were accused of attempted rape and soliciting for sex from prostitutes while on a trip to the United States.

The three representatives were among 10 lawmakers invited by the US government for the programme held between April 7 and 13, 2016 in Cleveland, Ohio.

The legislators, according to report, include: Mohammed Garba Gololo (APC, Bauchi), Samuel Ikon (PDP, Akwa Ibom) and Mark Gbillah (APC, Benue).

Reacting, however, Gbillah expressed surprise that within some hours of bringing the matter to the attention of the House, the US Government had gone ahead to cancel their visas.

If Brazil were to offer political asylum to Edward Snowden, he would gladly accept. The whistleblower told Brazilian TV that he is certain that if he returned to the US he would be tried unfairly for revealing the NSA’s global spy program.

In an interview with Fantastico, a weekly program broadcast by Brazilian Globo News, Snowden opened up about his life in Russia and said he has no regrets over what he has done. The interview is thought to have been filmed two weeks ago when a selfie of Snowden posing with David Miranda, Laura Poitras and journalist Glen Greenwald appeared online.

In several eastern Ukrainian towns over the past week, the military opened fire on its own citizens. Dozens may have been killed in the violence. Although the US government generally condemns a country’s use of military force against its own population, especially if they are unarmed protesters, this time the US administration blamed the victims. After as many as 20 unarmed protesters were killed on the May 9th holiday in Ukraine, the State Department spokesman said “we condemn the outbreak of violence caused by pro-Russia separatists.”

Why are people protesting in eastern Ukraine? Because they do not believe the government that came to power after the US-backed uprising in February is legitimate. They do not recognize the authority of an unelected president and prime minister. The US sees this as a Russian-sponsored destabilization effort, but is it so hard to understand that the people in Ukraine may be annoyed with the US and EU for their involvement in regime change in their country? Would we be so willing to accept an unelected government in Washington put in place with the backing of the Chinese and Iranians?

Why Hillary Clinton Refuse to Make Life Difficult for Boko Haram.

Josh Rogin reports at the Daily Beast that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made a terrible call on Nigerian terrorist group Boko Haram. That group is reported to have kidnapped over 200 young girls, and is now threatening to sell them into slavery.

Overnight, the group launched a violent attack that left as many as 310 dead. Its very name — Boko Haram — means “western education is sinful.” It’s linked to al Qaeda.

Back in 2011, several agencies within the US government wanted to slap the terrorist label on Boko Haram. Those agencies lobbied to put Boko Haram on the US State Department’s official list of terrorist groups. Hillary Clinton was secretary of state at the time, and she refused to label Boko Haram a terrorist group, despite pleading from others within the Obama administration.
