What has the United Kingdom just done to itself, its people and the future of its youth?

It is difficult to fully understand why a country in taking a decision about its future will decide on a false option that seems to negate long-term interests.

And this, just because a total of 17.4 million people out of over 61 million chose to vote against the United Kingdom’s continued membership of the EU.

More than 50% of these pro-Brexit voters are actually between the age bracket: 50-70.

Thus an ageing class of voters has taken a decision to undermine the future of the younger generation.

Pro-EU Prime Minister David Cameron said he was “courageous and optimistic” when in January 2014, he tried to justify the need for a referendum.

Britain has voted to leave the European Union, results from Thursday's landmark referendum showed, an outcome that sets the country on an uncertain path and deals the largest setback to European efforts to forge greater unity since World War Two.

World financial markets dived as nearly complete results showed a 51.8/48.2 percent split for leaving. Sterling suffered its biggest one-day fall of more than 10 percent against the dollar, hitting a 31-year low on market fears the decision will hit investment in the world's 5th largest economy.

The vote will initiate at least two years of messy divorce proceedings with the EU, raise questions over London's role as a global financial capital and put huge pressure on Prime Minister David Cameron to resign, though he pledged during the campaign to stay on whatever the result.

President Muhammadu Buhari Thursday in Abuja urged the United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to facilitate the faster recovery of Nigeria’s stolen wealth stashed abroad.

Receiving the Executive Secretary of UNODC, Mr Yury Fedotov, President Buhari said that the process of recovering the stolen assets had “become tedious’’ to the consternation of many Nigerians.

“We are looking for more cooperation from the EU, United States, other countries and international institutions to recover the nation’s stolen assets, particularly proceeds from the stolen crude oil.

“It is taking very long and Nigerians are becoming impatient,” the President said.

Nigerian Vice President Namadi Sambo, on Thursday, visited the scene of Wednesday’s blast at Emab Plaza, Wuse II, Abuja which claimed lives of at least 21 persons and wounded many more, declaring that the Boko Haram’s evil was sustainable.

He said the terrorists could not dampen the spirit of Nigerians with their evil acts, as he expressed confidence that terror would never gain ground in Nigeria or anywhere else in the world.

He appealed for cooperation with security agencies as they tackle crime and criminality in the country.

In several eastern Ukrainian towns over the past week, the military opened fire on its own citizens. Dozens may have been killed in the violence. Although the US government generally condemns a country’s use of military force against its own population, especially if they are unarmed protesters, this time the US administration blamed the victims. After as many as 20 unarmed protesters were killed on the May 9th holiday in Ukraine, the State Department spokesman said “we condemn the outbreak of violence caused by pro-Russia separatists.”

Why are people protesting in eastern Ukraine? Because they do not believe the government that came to power after the US-backed uprising in February is legitimate. They do not recognize the authority of an unelected president and prime minister. The US sees this as a Russian-sponsored destabilization effort, but is it so hard to understand that the people in Ukraine may be annoyed with the US and EU for their involvement in regime change in their country? Would we be so willing to accept an unelected government in Washington put in place with the backing of the Chinese and Iranians?

Nigerian students in Crimea to now get consular services from Russia

Nigeria’s Ambassador to Ukraine, Amb. Frank Isoh  has said that Nigerians in Crimea will require a new residence permit to stay in that region which was recently absobed into Russia.

Isoh in a telephone interview with the Europe Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday put the number of Nigerians in Crimea at 240, out of which 175 are students studying medicine.

He said that the Nigeria’s embassy in Russia would now be in charge of consular services of Nigerians in Crimea.
