Ghanaian president-elect, Nana Akufo-Addo, has appointed Saratu Atta as a personal assistant as he ramps up activities ahead of his inauguration Saturday.

Ms. Atta, 53, is a former wife of Nigerian politician, Femi Fani-Kayode. She has served as an executive aide to Mr. Akufo-Addo since 2009, a statement on the president-elect’s website said Wednesday.

She is amongst the three women of a total 12 appointees so far named by Mr. Akufo-Addo, but the statement did not provide further details about her new role.

The two other women are Akosua Osei-Opare, Chief of Staff to the President, and Clara Tia, a presidential staffer.

Reforming our Legal and Penal System - Faseyiku

If Nigeria must work, it will only do so if we have a legal and penal system that works. I love the on-going war against corruption and have high hopes that the administration will not be distracted. But we will be undone if we do not address the institutional robustness of the legal and penal system in Nigeria. The framework is currently too weak to sustain us and cope with the myriad of issues that are emerging daily. At the moment, lawyers take us for a ride and that must stop. In the UK, when you have a QC, I mean a single one, arguing your case, it can never get better. You hardly have a situation where 13 QCs (as in the case of PMB's certificate) or 60 QCs as in the Ricky Tarfa matter lining up behind an accussed. A case that one QC cannot argue successfully, a hundred are unlikely to do so. 

Therefore, if we need to pay judges as much as we pay the nation's number one citizen and ringfence the pensions payment system for retired judges to pevent them becoming "legal consultants" so be it. Indeed, we must bar them from any engagement with the bar in any form or shape once they retire from service. We must also make it possible for them to face criminal prosecution for proven cases of misconduct rather than simply retiring the errant ones. It has to be a combination of the stick and the carrot. Another way is to make it possible for them to serve on the bench for life as is the practice in the US. That way, the prospect of them becoming conduits of corruption will be curtailed. Retirement should be completely voluntary or based on health reasons.

I do not pity Mr. Nasir El-Rufai. If truly he is determined to effect a change in a small portion of that poverty landscape called the Kaduna State he has his work cut out for him. The greatest paradox of that change and its challenges is when his vision and foresight as a leader are completely beyond the people or group he leads. When I read that there were demonstrations in Kaduna against the anti-begging legislation I knew we do have a problem, a huge one. Mr. El-Rufai isn't a purist and should not be fully credited with a 21st century idea of society for his people, but we must arguably admit that he does have a 20th century vision. But when you have a 20th century perspective, as inelegant or outmoded as that is, but the people you lead are still trapped in their 14th century jacket, there is so much to do. You must get them into the 15th century first and if that works, move them into the 16th and with real success get into the 17th until you arrive where you had earlier hoped. The problem is that this guy has only four years, maximum eight, to transport a state of 6.3 million people into the 20th century and that is it. If he leaves while they are in the 16th century, and his successor, unfortunately, happens to be weaned to the 15th, there it is clear that they will go back to their Egypt, which is still the 14th century.

Transcorruption Agenda: SERAP calls on UK govt. to extradite Diezani Alison-Madueke over corruption allegations

Ahead of the International Anticorruption Summit in the UK this week, a civil society group Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on the UK authorities to “extradite Nigeria’s former petroleum minister Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke to face charges of corruption and money laundering, as the charges she is currently facing in UK court do not sufficiently capture the gravity of her alleged crimes, and the increasing allegations of corruption against her in Nigeria.”

The request followed announcement this week by the Central Bank of Nigeria that it was carrying out special investigations into the roles played by banks in certain financial transactions, especially the N23bn reportedly shared to officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission by officials of the former President Goodluck Jonathan administration to influence the outcome of the last general elections.

The diplomatic process that will ensure the extradition of suspected looters who have fled the country will dominate President Muhammadu Buhari’s discussions with his counterparts when 60 world leaders meet in the United Kingdom next month.
It was learnt on Friday that the President would at the summit explore ways of bringing to the country politicians who were being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

It was gathered that the outcome of the summit would speed up the extradition of individuals, including a former Minister of State for Defence, Mr. Musiliu Obanikoro; a former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu; and a former Chairman of the Pension Reform Task Force, Abdulrasheed Maina.

Others are the ex-Petroleum Minister, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke; her son, Ugonna; and a former Comptroller-General of Customs, Abdullahi Dikko, whose house was raided in Abuja in January by the EFCC.

Anti-corruption war: Buhari, 59 world leaders agree sanctions on looters

The party appears to be over for public officers in the habit of looting the nation’s treasury.

The Federal Government and 59 other nations will in May sign agreement on the sanctions to be imposed on corrupt political and public office holders.

President Muhammadu Buhari will join 59 other world leaders in the United Kingdom to seal the pact by which any of the 60 countries involved would no longer be a “safe haven” for treasury looters.

Some of the sanctions that may be imposed on culprits include: travel restriction or denial of entry visa into the 60 countries;rejection of request for political asylum by corrupt political and public office holders;likely loss of citizenship;no more approval of naturalization for any corrupt person;no establishment of shell companies abroad; andthe corrupt will not be allowed to operate foreign accounts in any of the 60 nations.

Nigeria is 55 years old today (1/10/15). As Nigeria celebrates her independency anniversary, let us pause, praise and blame ourselves for our fate, as we are the architects of Nigeria’s destiny and woes. Its worthy of note that Nigeria has remained as one till date, even though our foundation appears shaky and wobbly. But thank God, there is no major war,(even though the war against Boko Haram is ongoing). Thank God too, that there are no major natural disasters (even though some of our leaders are worst than natural calamities). But in all, let’s be grateful for the relative peace we enjoy. Countries like Libya, Syria, Somalia, etc are in major wars. Their citizens are worst off as a result. Watching millions of refugees from Syria, and seeing other war torn countries, makes you appreciate Nigeria.

Fellow party men and women,

Let me start by congratulating you all on this historic occasion - the first convention of our great party since the consummation of our merger on April 18th 2013.

It has been a long journey to come this far, but we are here, thanks to your commitment, your loyalty and above all your hard work. The journey has been long, but arriving at this stop has made it worth the while. Let me make it clear that this is but a stop in our steady and progressive march to Aso Rock next year.


When we consummated our merger, we said the aim of that historic and unprecedented achievement is to create a credible, alternative platform for Nigerians who are tired of the perpetual misrule of the PDP. Now, I can say clearly that Nigerians heard us clearly, and have reacted by joining our party in huge numbers. Our membership registration attests to this.

Presidency: Jonathan Condemns Jos Bomb Blasts, Approves More Measures To Strengthen Fight Against Terrorism

President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan strongly condemns the bomb blasts in Jos, Plateau state, today, describing the perpetrators of this tragic assault on human freedom as cruel and evil.  He has also directed all relevant agencies to mobilize support and relief efforts in aid of the victims. The President extends his heartfelt sympathies to the affected families and persons.

President Jonathan assures all Nigerians that government remains fully committed to winning the war against terror, and this administration will not be cowed by the atrocities of enemies of human progress and civilization.

President Jonathan has also expressed Nigeria’s deepest appreciation to the international community on the success of the recent Summit in Paris on the security situation in Nigeria hosted by the President of France, Francois Hollande.

He reaffirms Nigeria’s commitment to the implementation of the resolutions reached by the Summit, in addition to existing measures already being taken by the administration to combat terrorism and ensure the safety of lives.
 

Ashimolowo Urges Christians to Pray for Kidnapped Chibok Schoolgirls

The Senior Pastor of Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC) in London, Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo has called on the Christians to pray earnestly for the release of the schoolgirls kidnapped by the Boko Haram Islamist terrorists in Chibok, Borno state.

He said the situation leaves room for suspicion of collusion with the government and Boko Haram supporters.

Exactly month ago (April 14) the Islamist Boko Haram group kidnapped more than 200 school girls in Borno state with the claims that majority of them are Christians students of the area.

Australia to crack down on Boko Haram over kidnap of schoolgirls

Australia is cracking down on the Nigerian terror group that kidnapped 200 girls, banning Boko Haram under Australian terrorism laws. Prime Minister Tony Abbott says the whole world was transfixed and horrified by the group's hostage-taking.

The group is also responsible for the deaths of another 300 people in recent terror attacks.

Killings by the group alone this year amount to over 2000 persons. Mr Abbott says the government is taking steps to commence the process of banning Boko Haram as a terrorist organisation in line with action already taken by the US, UK, Canada and Nigeria.

As the Nigerian security agency are trying to ascertain the authenticity of the newly released video of the acclaimed Boko Haram Leader, Abubakar Shekau showing the abducted Chibok girls, kidnapped by the Islamist Jihadists a month ago, the Spokesperson of the State Security Service (SSS), Ms Marilyn Ogar has told the world that the man who appears on the video released by Boko Haram, claiming to be the leader, is not the real Abubakar Shekau, and that the real Abubakar Shekau is dead.
