Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. The word ‘yoga’ derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness.

Today it is practiced in various forms around the world and continues to grow in popularity.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the global benefits of Yoga: "Yoga is a sport that can contribute to development and peace. Yoga can even help people in emergency situations to find relief from stress.”

Nigeria is 55 years old today (1/10/15). As Nigeria celebrates her independency anniversary, let us pause, praise and blame ourselves for our fate, as we are the architects of Nigeria’s destiny and woes. Its worthy of note that Nigeria has remained as one till date, even though our foundation appears shaky and wobbly. But thank God, there is no major war,(even though the war against Boko Haram is ongoing). Thank God too, that there are no major natural disasters (even though some of our leaders are worst than natural calamities). But in all, let’s be grateful for the relative peace we enjoy. Countries like Libya, Syria, Somalia, etc are in major wars. Their citizens are worst off as a result. Watching millions of refugees from Syria, and seeing other war torn countries, makes you appreciate Nigeria.

But for the lives we are losing in Nigeria and West Africa, I would have stated that I have fallen in love with Ebola. This virus is creating a strange, unfamiliar creature in Nigeria called responsible leadership. I doubt if there is any Nigerian in my generation who has ever witnessed responsible, hands-on, on-top-of-the-situation leadership in his or her entire adult life. What we are familiar with is an irresponsible leadership of escape into an alternative universe.

NNPC: India now largest crude importer

Lagos - Oil-rich Nigeria said on Thursday that India has replaced the United States as its largest crude importer, accounting for more than a quarter of its daily output.

India has replaced the United States of America as the largest importer of Nigeria’s crude oil, with China and Malaysia following closely, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has said. "The US, which had traditionally taken the bulk of Nigeria's crude, has in recent months drastically reduced its demand, which now stands at about 250,000 barrels per day," the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) said in a statement.

"India, however, now purchases some 30 percent of Nigeria's daily crude production which currently hovers around 2.5 million barrels," it said, quoting senior official Tim Okon.

Nigeria Government has declared a Gross Domestic Product, GDP, of N80.3 trillion ($509.9bn), pushing ahead of South Africa as the biggest economy on the African continent. The new GDP compares with South Africa’s GDP of N60.7 trillion ($370.3bn) at the end of 2013.

US Ambassador Nancy Powell meets India's Narendra Modi

US Ambassador to India Nancy Powell has held talks with Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi marking an end to a decade-long US boycott of the controversial leader.

 Mr Modi is the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party's candidate for PM in the forthcoming elections.He was criticised for doing little to prevent religious riots in Gujarat in 2002 in which more than 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, died.

Mr Modi has always denied wrongdoing. 

Riots erupted after 60 Hindu pilgrims died in a train fire which Muslims were blamed for igniting.

Many Western governments broke off contact with Mr Modi's government after the riots. The US continues to refuse him permission to enter the country.

Correspondents say Thursday's meeting is an attempt by the US to build bridges with Mr Modi, whose Hindu nationalist BJP is widely expected to win the elections due by May.

On Thursday morning, Ms Powell shook hands with Mr Modi at his residence in Gujarat's capital Gandhinagar, before going in for closed-door talks, the Associated Press news agency reported.

Ms Powell and her entourage arrived in four official cars, but she did not speak to waiting reporters.

The US Embassy in a statement said that the "meeting was part of the US Mission's outreach to senior leaders of India's major political parties in advance of the upcoming national elections".

The statement said Ms Powell would also meet "representatives from non-governmental organisations and US and Indian businesses" in Gujarat.

"Her discussions focus on the importance of the US-India relationship, regional security issues, human rights, and American trade and investment in India," the statement said.

Under Mr Modi's leadership, Gujarat has been turned into one of India's economic powerhouses.

But he continues to be seen as a divisive figure and has not expressed remorse or offered an apology for the 2002 violence.
