OONI CELEBRATES OSOOSI DEITY OF WORSHIP CONGREGATION, SAYS YORUBA RELIGION CAN SOLVE THE CHALLENGES OF PEACE IN AFRICA

The gates of the ancient city of Ile-Ife believed to be the source of mankind were yesterday evening thrown open as people trooped in from all over the world to join the multitude people of the sacred town in celebrating Osoosi believed to be the father of philanthropy and religious congregation for purity and sanity .

The Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty, Ooni Adeyeye Ogunwusi Ojaja II during the festival proffered Yoruba traditional religion as a tool in solving the challenges of peace and love in Nigeria and Africa.

The festival was attended by dignitaries from different countries and continents in the world especially America and the Caribbean countries. He lamented that the neglect of tradition in the Africa continent contributed to Nigeria's challenges.

For the challenge to be resolved, he said that people must develop positive attitudes towards the Yoruba and Africa traditions.‎

The breakthrough for many victims of atrocities committed under the former Chadian dictator Hissène Habré came on May 30 in Dakar, Senegal. After nearly two decades of effort by activists, the Extraordinary African Chambers in the courts of Senegal convicted Habré of torture, war crimes and crimes against humanity and handed down a life sentence. For those of us in the courtroom, the cries of joy from the victims after the judges’ ruling underscored its immense importance.

Habré was the first African suspect prosecuted under ‘universal jurisdiction’

The Habré trial was the first in which a court in Africa prosecuted a suspect under “universal jurisdiction”— which allows states to prosecute certain heinous crimes even if they were committed abroad, by foreigners and against foreigners. While many countries have universal jurisdiction laws, few have used them. European countries have launched most such cases. South Africa has begun to investigate crimes on the basis of universal jurisdiction but has yet to bring any prosecutions.

I would like, Mr. President, on behalf of the Government and people of Nigeria, to congratulate you and your country on your election to preside over the 70th session of the U.N. General Assembly.

May I also express appreciation to your predecessor, Mr. Sam Kahamba Kutesa and the Secretary General Mr. Ban Ki-moon both of whom worked tirelessly to ensure proper articulation of the post-2015 Development Agenda and to maintain the focus and commitment to the ideals of the United Nations. I thank Mr. Ban Ki-moon for his recent visit to Nigeria when we held very useful discussions.

Maigari resigns as NFF President, Keshi contract talks resume

Alhaji Aminu Maigari

The president of the Nigeria Football Federation, Alhaji Aminu Maigari, has formally resigned his position on the NFF Board with effect from August 26, 2014.

“The Bauchi-born administrator resigned as NFF President on August 12, 2014 to pave way for a peaceful resolution of the crisis that engulfed the football federation shortly after the 2014 FIFA World Cup,” a letter from the SA Media to the Honourable Minister of Sports, Patrick Omorodion, said.

Meanwhile, Super Eagles Coach, Stephen Keshi has agreed to resume work with the team preparatory to the forthcoming qualifying matches for the 2015 Africa Nations Cup against Congo and South Africa on September 6, 2014.

The decision is based on the Sports Minister/Chairman, National Sports Commission, Dr. Tammy Dangogo’s intervention following the prolonged negotiation between the Nigeria Football Federation and Keshi over his contract as well as the coach’s love fot the country.

Nigeria Government has declared a Gross Domestic Product, GDP, of N80.3 trillion ($509.9bn), pushing ahead of South Africa as the biggest economy on the African continent. The new GDP compares with South Africa’s GDP of N60.7 trillion ($370.3bn) at the end of 2013.
