Prebendalism: Why Buhari Is Not Fighting Corruption and Why He Can Not Fight Corruption

President Buhari
When next someone tells you President Buhari is fighting corruption, look the person in the eye and call the person an ignoramus.

Let me explain to you why Buhari is not fighting corruption and why he cannot fight corruption.

First, if we are to judge an administration as fighting corruption based on how much EFCC recovered under the administration, then Buhari administration has not done anything special.

Before Buhari came into power in 2015, the EFCC had recovered over $12billion in the name of 'fighting corruption'.

As long as our economy is still in recession, our work is not done - Saraki tells Senate colleagues

Distinguished colleagues, as long as our economy is still in recession, our work is not done. Because our people are still being laid off; so long as factories are closing shop, for as the hardship in the land continues to bite harder, investment continues to dwindle and the foreign exchange market remains fragmented, I will be demanding even much more from us to get all our economic reform bills passed. Ideally we would like to see them pass together with the 2017 budget. Let me therefore urge all our committees involved with our priority bills to double efforts to ensure that by the end of the first quarter of this year we will have these bills ready

WELCOME BACK SPEECH BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE, FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA, HIS EXCELLENCY, SENATOR (DR) ABUBAKAR BUKOLA SARAKI (CON) TO SENATORS OF THE 8TH SENATE ON RESUMPTION FROM 2016 END OF THE YEAR RECESS ON TUESDAY, 10 JANUARY, 2017.
Abubakar Bukola Saraki

Protocol:

1. Distinguished colleagues, it is heart warming for me to see you back in good health, refreshed and energised for the work ahead. Let me on behalf of myself and the entire leadership wish you and all Nigerians a very happy new year.

2. 2016, was a very challenging year for all of us. But I assure you that the work we have done so far is gradually setting the stage for a greater and better 2017. Let me therefore, begin this address by thanking every one of you for the hard work and dedication exhibited in the last quarter of last year to keep the promise we made to all Nigerians that we would pass laws that would make the difference in their lives.

CRIMINALITY RULES NIGER DELTA! -by Joe Igbokwe

Criminality which has been the order of the day in the Niger Delta has reached the point of no return. A reliable source tells me recently that the underdevelopment we see in Niger Delta today is self inflicted. I was told that major oil companies had in the past mapped out projects to be executed by themselves in the region that worth billions but the leaders preferred to be given just a part of it which they shared among themselves.

This has been the way of the Niger Delta indigenes since the 80s. No wonder the region has remained a war zone and the haven for bandits, gangs, kidnappers, cultists, vandals, assassins, hired killers etc. Criminality has become a culture and tradition in the Niger Delta.

PRESIDENT BUHARI MOURNS SENATOR FRANCIS OKPOZO

President Muhammadu Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari expresses heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Delta State on the death of Chief Francis Okpozo, a Second Republic senator and member of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The President also commiserates with the family and friends of the late distinguished senator, whose championing of social justice in the Niger Delta, during his long history of service to the people, endeared him to many.

As a stalwart of the APC in the South-South, President Buhari believes that the party greatly benefited from the octogenarian's charismatic leadership and wealth of experience as a politician.

Operation Python Dance: How Nigerian Army Becoming Threat to Internal Security

Buratai
The Nigerian Army is becoming a threat to internal security and need to stop creating more internal enemies for the central government. Which one be 'Operation Python Dance'?

When they launched the 'Operation Crocodile Smile', we wailed and questioned the rationale behind the operation. We argued that the operation was a fraud and will not solve any problem in the Niger Delta, rather it will compound it. Today, that operation alone has made the Niger Deltans more united in seeing the federal government as their common enemy. Has operation crocodile smile ended? Is there still oil bunkering in the Niger Delta (and oh yes, is the army still not complicit in the oil bunkering industry)? What about militancy? What did the operation crocodile smile achieve? How much was spent?

The Nigerian army has launched another operation in the South-East code named 'Operation Python Dance'. Another job for the army generals.

Conversation between a Federalist and a Unitarist (Part 1) - Tony Osborg

Federalist: Something is fundamentally wrong with the structure of our federalism. We need to restructure this system and entrench true federalism. This system is not working.

Unitarist: There is nothing wrong with the structure of our federalism. Our problem is bad leadership; bad leaders who have looted our future and have destroyed our federal system. We do not need to restructure the system, what we need is to elect good leaders into office and restructure the minds of Nigerians so they can be less bias, less corrupt and more patriotic.

Why Nigeria MUST NOT let the Igbos leave this union - Tony

I have tried to measure the contribution of the Igbos to the development of the Nigerian project and the conclusion I have reached is that Nigeria must do everything possible to get the Igbos to remain in the Nigerian union. They (Igbos) have contributed unprecedentedly to the development of Nigeria in EVERY sector. The Igbos are an exceptional Nigerian race; they are born entrepreneurs, geniuses, capitalists, industrialists, academics, adventurists and you name it. A Nigeria without these set of people and their drive for economic success might be boring and uninteresting.

Speech by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Ramadan Breaking of Fast with the Diplomatic Corps

President Muhammadu Buhari Addressing  Diplomatic Corps
Protocols:

I welcome you all to this iftar dinner and I thank you for accepting my invitation. It has become an annual tradition which I am quite happy to maintain.

2. This Ramadan season is auspicious to me in one very important respect as it coincides with our administration’s first year in office. It has indeed been a challenging time for Nigeria. But our government has striven to meet these challenges head-on and with a proper commitment to address them. Much has been achieved but clearly much remains to be done.

3. As everyone knows, the security situation that we met at inception in May 2015 was one that portended great danger for the unity and territorial integrity of the country. Boko Haram was running rampant across the country seizing territories. Today, thanks to our motivated Armed Forces, Boko Haram has been technically defeated.

Days of military misadventure into politics will never repeat itself – Buratai

ABUJA—Following recent disclosure by some senior officers of the Nigerian Army, including the 38 officers sacked by the Army Council for alleged complicity and partisanship in the 2015 general election, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai, has dared those not satisfied with the process to go to court.

Buratai admitted that some of the officers had petitioned the Army Council and other quarters over their alleged unjust retirement, insisting that due process was followed to the letter.

Speaking on the allegations regarding his family’s purchase of houses in Dubai and that of the alleged purchase of refurbished weaponry and logistics equipment which were presented as brand new, the Army Chief described such allegations as the handiwork of cyber and internet terrorists who had been defeated on land at the epicenter of Boko Haram insurgency.

PRESIDENT BUHARI WILL LEAVE NIGERIA CLEANER AND SANER--FEMI ADESINA

Shortly before the one year anniversary of President Muhammadu Buhari administration, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, spoke to PREMIUM TIMES’ Festus Owete and Sani Tukur, on the achievements of the administration, how the president spends his time outside official hours, his family life, and capacity to govern Nigeria.

Read the interview below:

PT: One year after, how has the journey been?

Adesina: So far so good, I will say. Because, if you recall how our country was this time last year and compare it with how it is today, you will see that there is a big difference, particularly in the area of security, in the area of the anti-corruption war, you can say that this government has done very well. The third one is the economy. That one is still tricky and it is work in progress. Then you take it one by one because there are three key promises APC made while campaigning. The president believes that you cannot administer a country you have not secured. And that is why he has gone all out to try and secure the country. You recall that by this time last year you weren’t quite sure where Nigeria was headed. Boko Haram was not just in the north east, it was in the north west, it was in north central and it could go down south anytime. That was the fear in the country. After some time the military pushed them back, got them circumscribed within the north east and as we speak they are even in the narrower area which is the Sambisa Forest. You can say other battlefronts have been opened in Niger Delta, herdsmen, kidnapping. Those are issues but one thing that is not in doubt is that this government has the capacity to deal with all the issues. I am not saying they are all going to be by armed conflict or by force of arms. Where they need to dialogue, they dialogue and where they need to negotiate, they negotiate. But this government does not lack the capacity to secure this country. So that gives us a lot of hope. Security wise, the government has done very well. On anti-corruption, of course we know what has been uncovered in this country. I remember in the UK about two weeks ago, one foreign media asked the president – did you know it was this bad? He confessed that he knew it was bad but he didn’t know it was that bad. It has turned out very, very bad. But it is also something that the government is tackling and the president is determined to leave a saner and cleaner Nigeria in terms of accountability and probity by the way he is going. No matter what anybody says about this corruption war, no friend no foe, no retreat, no surrender. Anybody, irrespective of who he is, if he has questions to answer on corruption, he will have to answer. I hear people say that it is selective. They need to prove. He who alleges must also prove. The anti-corruption war is going on and going on very well and it has earned Nigeria a lot of respect in the international community. The third promise he made was to revive the economy. Like I said earlier, that one is still key and touchy but it will be done because when the economy collapses as Nigeria’s did, it is not something you bring back by a snap of the fingers. It takes a lot of re-tooling and re-engineering to bring it back. It is work in progress and we will get there. No doubt, jobs will come from agriculture and solid minerals and other policies will stimulate the economy. It is a N6 trillion budget for instance for the first time. If it is properly implemented, and there is no reason why it will not be properly implemented, it will stimulate the economy. There will be more spending money at the disposal of Nigerians. So, I will say so far so good, the government is on course. I have used this illustration before, and I will use it again. Nigeria is like a plane that has taken off and is gaining altitude, with its nose in the air. As long as its nose is in the air, it is climbing. If the nose is down it is a danger signal.

SOUTH SOUTH & SOUTH EAST NIGERIA: AN AWAITING CONFLAGRATION

From the moment the locomotive called Nigeria was economically redesigned to fully run on 'Crude Oil', at the expense of the country's other enormous mineral resources, the number of illegal arms and ammunition vis-a-viz the number of militants, hoodlums and rogues in the south south and in the south east Oil producing Nigerian States has grown exponentially and in return lead to the agitation for Biafra nation, emergence of numerous accidental Multimillionaires and Billionaires, incessant political killings, rampant kidnapping, armed robbery and pipeline vandalism Et al in that region...

Obviously, that 'flash-point of war' region is sitting on a 'keg of gun-powder' waiting to burst into a magnanimous conflagration capable of consuming both the trigger and the innocents. In other words, the President Buhari led government must carefully diagnose the illness before administering the prescribed medicine for patients who are suffering from 'pipeline vandalism sickness' or choose to usher the 'political insanity' into a full blown anarchy, because anything more or less than the actual dosage may lead to a continuous catastrophe.

Spectrum of Leadership Vision(lessness) & Hopeless Followership - Oluseyi Faseyiku

From Buhari to the youngest state chief executive, Yahaya Bello, tell me whose offspring can be found in a Nigerian college or a local university.

I do not pity Mr. Nasir El-Rufai. If truly he is determined to effect a change in a small portion of that poverty landscape called the Kaduna State he has his work cut out for him. The greatest paradox of that change and its challenges is when his vision and foresight as a leader are completely beyond the people or group he leads. When I read that there were demonstrations in Kaduna against the anti-begging legislation I knew we do have a problem, a huge one. Mr. El-Rufai isn't a purist and should not be fully credited with a 21st century idea of society for his people, but we must arguably admit that he does have a 20th century vision. But when you have a 20th century perspective, as inelegant or outmoded as that is, but the people you lead are still trapped in their 14th century jacket, there is so much to do. You must get them into the 15th century first and if that works, move them into the 16th and with real success get into the 17th until you arrive where you had earlier hoped. The problem is that this guy has only four years, maximum eight, to transport a state of 6.3 million people into the 20th century and that is it. If he leaves while they are in the 16th century, and his successor, unfortunately, happens to be weaned to the 15th, there it is clear that they will go back to their Egypt, which is still the 14th century.

HOW NIGERIAN NAVY AVERTS PIRATE ATTACK ON 3 MERCHANT VESSELS

The Nigerian Navy has averted pirate attack on 3 merchant vessels, namely MV MOXON, MT AFRICAN BEAUTY and MT MADONA. The vessels were attacked around Brass waterways in Bayelsa State on 3 and 4 May 2016.

THE GRAVE ALLEGATIONS OF STEPHEN DAVIS BY FANI-KAYODE

I read the grave allegations made by an Australian by the name of Mr. Stephen Davis about those that he believes are behind Boko Haram in the 29th August edition of Thisday Newspaper. He made some very serious allegations, he mentioned names and I would be interested in seeing the hard evidence that he claims to have.

I have always said that I believe that anyone, no matter which political party that person belongs to and no matter how highly placed or powerful that person may be, that is involved with Boko Haram ought to be captured, caged, flogged and brought to justice because I regard such people as nothing but bloodthirsty beasts.

I have also always said that I believe that some of the leading members of the opposition APC are secret sponsors and supporters of Boko Haram and I am glad that Mr. Davis appears to share this view and that he has indeed confirmed my worst fears in his celebrated interview with Arise TV.
