Some stood on June 12, some shat on it....we neither laughed nor cried. as we threw ourselves with the utmost passion to the tasks of struggle in those momentous times: at the barricades; prison lodgings and; meetings in the craze outside world, our position was clear: "Neither MKO or IBB/Abacha" but for the working class' self-emancipation & system change. as with then, today illusions in another custodian is rife; a 1-chance custodian of one kind change.
There are lessons to be drawn from that period....but we must rise up to the challenge of not only interpreting the current situation with all its contradictions; but as well change it. BABA AYE
We remember June 12th 1993, an annulled election that triggered a mass resistance against military dictatorship. This is a day to pay glowing tribute to the generation of Nigerians; Students unionists, Civil Rights activists, Labour leaders, Academia, Journalists, the progressives, women leaders who defied the odds of jail and bullets and who endured the pain of exile to deliver the Nation to democracy.
Late Chief MKO Abiola remains a historic symbol of democracy. A debt of gratitude to late the Chief Gani Fawehimmis, Adesanyas, Danbazaus, Bekos, Ubanis, Bagauda Kalthos, Dr Bala Usmans and other fallen heroes of freedom. We will not forget the Tinubus, Falanas, Odions, Col Umars, Balarabe Musas, Jitis,Agbakobas, Keyamos, Mayeguns, Erubamis who stood and spoke in defiance of its consequences.
Many young people may not know what happened or appreciate its historic relevance; June 12 struggle was the seed of Nigeria's journey to democracy.
