What Will a Restructured Nigeria Look Like?

The most important task before us right now is envisaging what a restructured Nigeria would look like. We have agreed that Nigeria needs restructuring based on the principles of federalism. The next big question should be; what should a restructured Nigeria look like? This is what I have set out to answer in this lecture.

How should responsibilities be shared between the federal and state governments in a restructured Nigeria? We believe it will be inappropriate for us as a Movement to impose regions or even states on the people of Nigeria. This is why we believe the people (ethnic nationalities) themselves must be given the opportunity to decide whether they want regions or states as the federating units. Whatever the case may be, these twenty rules must be followed. To answer these questions, we have drawn up twenty rules that should guide us in our debate. Find below the twenty rules that we consider as fundamental to a two-tier system of federal structure and which we think is best suitable for a country like Nigeria.

MINISTRY OF INTERIOR HOLDS ONE-DAY INTERACTIVE SESSION WITH THE PRESIDENTIAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE AGAINST CORRUPTION (PACAC)

The Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption and the Ministry of Interior have concluded a one day interactive session in Abuja.

Professor Femi Odekunle who led other members of the committee to the Ministry of Interior, observed the overall importance of having the session with Interior Ministry considering the fact that agencies under the Ministry such as the Nigeria Police, Immigration and Prison Services are largely seen by many as the face of the Nigeria government, due to their broad-based interaction with the populace as well as their functionality in the Criminal Justice System.

Prof Odekunle in his opening remarks noted the need to articulate the nexus between corruption and poor service delivery with a view to tackling it head-long in order to boost safety and security needed for inflow of direct foreign investments.

Barack Obama PRAISES Merkel for handling of migrant crisis but Germans want her OUT

PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA has praised Angela Merkel for her handling of the escalating EU migrant crisis despite growing cracks in the German chancellor’s power base as her approval ratings plummet over her immigration stance.

During a visit to Hannover, the US president said: “She is on the right side of history on this.

"In this globalised world, it is very difficult for us to simply build walls.”

His remarks come amid an increasingly fractious debate over radical Islamism in Germany, sparked by Mrs Merkel's ill-fated open door asylum policy.

Shocking opinion polls delivered a crushing blow to the German Chancellor as it was revealed Mrs Merkel's conservatives lost in two out of three state elections.

Germans appear to be punishing her accommodative refugee policy.

More than 1.1 million migrants entered Germany last year, with most coming from Middle Eastern and North African countries.

But Mrs Merkel's grip on power is growing ever weaker, with rebellion growing across the country against her controversial immigration policies.

Encounter with DSS @ MM Intl Airport - Tyranny has returned to Nigeria

It was Friday, 15th day of April 2016. I arrived at the airport for a scheduled flight back to the U.S., I checked in my luggage and went through immigration to the boarding area. Immediately as I walked away from the immigration scanning area two plain clothed men walked to me; they brought out a photograph of me printed, I guessed, printed from my blog.

They asked, "are you Madukar Orji? I said yes. They identified themselves as State Security officers.

I expected this on my arrival, not on departure. They brought out about three articles written by me from my blog. One of then, with chaotic intimidating voice said, “it is Nigerians like you
abroad that write rubbish about the country.

Calmly I replied, “I don’t know what many write, but I do not write rubbish, I write nothing but truth.

I went further to exemplified my points in relation to the articles they had. They stood still for seconds without response. At this point they asked for my passport and boarding pass.

They said to me, “it seems your journey has come to an end here.” I said nothing, but gently smiled. In an unintended chorus both men said, “so you are an American citizen?

Nigeria2015 elections: Police ‘mopping up’ arms

The force has suspended the issuance of licence for private arms.
(NAN) - The Nigeria Police said they have started mopping up arms ahead of the 2015 general elections in the country.
Frank Mba, the Force Public Relations Officer, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Sunday.
He added that the police had placed surveillance on public armouries across the country and the nation’s borders in order to checkmate illegal possession of arms.
He said that many black spots were also being raided across the nation.
“One major factor behind thuggery is the proliferation of illegal arms. As a result of this, we have been mopping up arms across the country,” Mr. Mba said.
He disclosed that many illegal arms had been discovered in Lagos State.
“Police in other states are doing same. We are mounting surveillance on public armouries to check proliferation of light arms in wrong hands.
“The Marine police are checking our waters, particularly in Niger Delta. We are checking local arms production,” he said.
Mr. Mba said the police had also discovered some factories in Edo, Anambra and other places. Those arms and factories were destroyed, he said.
The police spokesman said that arrangement was on to recover all illegal arms in the country for destruction.
He said the police were collaborating with the military, Department of State Service, Civil Defence Corps, Immigration, Customs and private security organisations to achieve set goals.
“As we speak, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has placed embargo on issuance of licence to individuals for arms. This is just one way to check arms in the country,’’ he said.
Mr. Mba said the IGP had reduced the use of police escort by politicians and some private persons nationwide.
He said that surveillance had also been placed on politicians and private persons, with a view to checking anyone using police officers without permit.
“We should however note that some people are to be protected by the police because of their position in Nigeria. Even in developed world, the state provides special security for some people’’, he said. (NAN)
