 Develops strategy for violence free elections

The Inspector General of Police, Ag.IGP Ibrahim K. Idris, NPM, mni has expressed his satisfaction with the impressive performance of Police Officers in the re-run elections in Kogi and Imo States on 23rd July, 2016 and commended the officers for their unalloyed service to the nation.

As a lead security agency in democratic policing, the IGP commended the Police Officers for their personal and collective demonstration of patriotism, professionalism and commitment in ensuring that the re-run elections were conducted in an atmosphere of peace devoid of any breach of public security.

The ability of the Police Officers to dominate their areas of jurisdiction and supervision before, during and after the elections is a clear testimony of the police new resolve to adhere to international best practices in the conduct of elections.

Forgery Trial Of Senate Leaders: Buhari Threatened With Impeachment; Dino Melaye Threatens To Beat Up Senator Tinubu

Nigeria’s upper legislative chamber broke into an uproar today with some members threatening President Muhammad Buhari with impeachment, and Dino Melaye threatening to ‘impregnate’ Remi Tinubu, the wife of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader.

The Senators who met behind closed doors were incensed by the proposed trial of the leadership of the Senate for forgery.

Shortly after commencement of a plenary session, some Senators called on their colleagues, led by Senators Suleiman Othman Hunkuyi (APC Kaduna North) and Kabir Marafa (APC Zamfara Central) to sheathe their sword and withdraw the petition that had led to the criminal prosecution of Senate President Bukola Saraki and his Deputy, Ike Ekweremadu.

The Executive Session, which was chaired by Saraki, also reminded the Senate that a committee led by former Senate President David Mark had been set up to “reconcile” members. Curiously, Mr. Mark stood and said he was not informed that he chairs such a committee and that he didn’t know any members. He was simply told to do his “work”.

President Buhari writes NASS, Notify lawmakers of his resumption to duties after a ten-day vacation

The Nigerian President, Mr. Muhammadu Buhari has written a letter to National Assembly informing the lawmakers of his resumption of duties on June 20, 2016 after a ten-day medical vacation to the United Kingdom.

President Buhari who formally resume work yesterday Monday, a day after he returned from London where he travelled to for vacation and ear evaluation, says it is good to be back at work.

Kaduna Govt speaks on recent police actions, urges calm on petrol supply

The Kaduna State Government has not started enforcing the prohibition of begging and hawking. A government statement explained that the prohibition of begging law will not take effect until after 60 days. The statement added that it is the police that is currently undertaking arrests within Kaduna as part of security operations directed by the Inspector General of Police.

According to Samuel Aruwan who is the Special Assistant to the Governor Media and Publicity: “The Kaduna State Government has not directed the police to enforce the begging law, which is not due to come into force yet. Malam Nasir El-Rufai has repeatedly stated that rehabilitation opportunities would be offered for the disabled. The State Executive Council has just approved a Disability Policy, which is a necessary precursor to the drafting of any bill or other measures to promote the rights of the disabled.

Code of Conduct Tribunal: IGP Gets ULTIMATUM To Produce Saraki Within 24hrs

In Nigeria, the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), has ordered the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, to arrest and bring the Senate President, Bukola Saraki before the Tribunal on Tuesday, by 10am.



Justice Danladi Umar,  who is the Chairman of the tribunal, gave the ruling on Monday, after Saraki for the second time, failed to show up before the Tribunal.

INEC backs law to check deployment of soldiers, police during elections

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Attahiru Jega, has backed a bill by the House of Representatives seeking to give the electoral body powers to control the movement of soldiers and other security personnel during elections.

Mr. Jega gave the support Tuesday at a public hearing organised by the lower legislative chamber. The National Assembly had in its proposed amendment sought the insertion of a new paragraph (b) into Section 29(1) of the Electoral Act to limit the role played by the military to “securing the distribution and delivery of electoral materials”. 

Gov. Aregbesola presents 20 superior Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) to state Police command

The Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola presented yesterday 20 superior Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) worth more than N1.3billion to the police command.

Presenting the vehicles to the police, Aregbesola expressed worry at what he called the Federal Government’s penchant for playing politics with crucial security matters.

He appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to separate politics from security by granting the state a short code for its emergency centre.

Emir of Kano drops court case against Jonathan

The Emir of Kano and former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Lamido Sanusi, has dropped the suit against the federal government challenging his suspension from office. The development indicated the Emir will discontinue his legal battle with the President after both men had reconciliatory telephone conversation.

President Goodluck Jonathan had on February 20 suspended Mr. Sanusi from his position as governor of the CBN over allegations of financial recklessness.

In the Notice of Discontinuance dated July 1, 2014, and filed same day, Mr. Sanusi’s lawyers informed the court of his intention to discontinue the matter.

I want Jonathanians to justify the decision of their paymaster to send 36,000 security agents to Ekiti State (A State with a lesser population than each of the troubled States) for today's gubernatorial election when the total number of security agencies deployed to the 3 troubled States in the North East is presently below 36,000.

We would not allow Ekiti State to be turned to a war zone, persons being picked up indiscriminately without any offence are an attack on the generality of Ekiti people. And why would it be that these arrests are targeted at only opposition  APC members and their supporters...?

President Goodluck Jonathan sent 36,000 security agents to Ekiti for the gubernatorial elections. Security sources confirmed that there are 12,340 regular policemen;  26 sniffer dogs; 3170 anti-riot policemen; 4,280 soldiers; 1800 Nigerian secret police operatives and  15,000 civil defense personnel on ground in the state for today's election.

IGP pledges to arrest culprits of Jos bomb blast

Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, has promised that the Nigerian Police will arrest culprits of Tuesday’s twin bomb explosions in Jos. The Police chief gave the assurance at the premises of the Jos University Teaching Hospital on Wednesday, when he visited victims at the hospitals.

Jos was thrown into pandemonium on Tuesday when two bombs went off in quick succession killing about 200 persons according to body counts by emergency and health officials. Mr. Abubakar said the police have commenced investigations into the incident, with the intention of arresting the culprits.

“No government can tolerate this kind of situation anywhere, this is an unfortunate situation. We must get to the root of this, that is why Mr. President has sent me to assess the situation,” he said. “I want to appeal to the people of Plateau state to continue to be patient. I want Plateau people to collaborate with security agents to enable us unmask those behind this bombing,” the IG stated.

Boko Haram: Opposition Governors Shun Meeting With Jonathan

The opposition governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were conspicuously absent when the meeting convened by President Goodluck Jonathan started by 2.00pm at the First Lady Conference Room in the State House, Abuja, on Thursday.

Jonathan had on Wednesday summoned all governors and National Security Council to a meeting over rising security challenges in the country.

Army begins operation to stop clashes in Benue, Plateau, Nasarawa

The Nigerian Military troops has started a major anti-terrorist operation in three states in the North Central region of Nigeria. Director of Defence Information, Chris Olukolade, made the hint on Monday that the operation is aimed at putting an end to criminal activities in the concerned states.

The three troubled North-Central states are Nassarawa, Plateau and Benue where there are incessant communal clashes. Olukolade said military troops have been deployed to these states to launch offensive attack and bring an end to the recent killings and property destruction in the affected areas.

Defense spokesperson said the army operations in the three state will focus on Internal Security, capturing and neutralizing all criminal hideouts. He affirmed that the Nigerian Air Force, Police and other security agencies are also participating in the operation designed to restore peace in the troubled states.

POLICE TRAIN OVER 16,00 OFFICERS AHEAD OF 2015 GENERAL ELECTIONS

The Nigeria Police Boss, IGP Mohammed Abubakar, on Tuesday ordered the release of over 16,000 police officers for promotion and election security course accross Nigeria. The officers, while on course, are expected to undergo an intensive training on election protection duties.

A statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, said the Inspector General of Police, Abubakar, has endorsed the training for the men and officers of the force as part of a proactive measure by the Nigeria Police to ensure a violent free election in 2015.

Mba said the training courses are designed to equip the men with new skills in standard operational policing practices, human rights protections, principles of democratic policing as well as rules of engagement in election security.

We must arrest Sanusi – FG tells court

The Federal Government had on Friday told a Federal High Court in Lagos that it cannot stop the police and the Department of State Security Service from arresting the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mallam Sanusi Lamido.

The former apex bank governor had earlier filed a suit seeking an order restraining the police and officers of the Department of State Security (DSS) from arresting, detaining or otherwise harassing him.

Nigeria2015 elections: Police ‘mopping up’ arms

The force has suspended the issuance of licence for private arms.

(NAN) - The Nigeria Police said they have started mopping up arms ahead of the 2015 general elections in the country.

Frank Mba, the Force Public Relations Officer, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Sunday.

He added that the police had placed surveillance on public armouries across the country and the nation’s borders in order to checkmate illegal possession of arms.

He said that many black spots were also being raided across the nation.

“One major factor behind thuggery is the proliferation of illegal arms. As a result of this, we have been mopping up arms across the country,” Mr. Mba said.

He disclosed that many illegal arms had been discovered in Lagos State.

“Police in other states are doing same. We are mounting surveillance on public armouries to check proliferation of light arms in wrong hands.

“The Marine police are checking our waters, particularly in Niger Delta. We are checking local arms production,” he said.

Mr. Mba said the police had also discovered some factories in Edo, Anambra and other places. Those arms and factories were destroyed, he said.

The police spokesman said that arrangement was on to recover all illegal arms in the country for destruction.

He said the police were collaborating with the military, Department of State Service, Civil Defence Corps, Immigration, Customs and private security organisations to achieve set goals.

“As we speak, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has placed embargo on issuance of licence to individuals for arms. This is just one way to check arms in the country,’’ he said.

Mr. Mba said the IGP had reduced the use of police escort by politicians and some private persons nationwide.

He said that surveillance had also been placed on politicians and private persons, with a view to checking anyone using police officers without permit.

“We should however note that some people are to be protected by the police because of their position in Nigeria. Even in developed world, the state provides special security for some people’’, he said. (NAN)
