Syria: Freed Aleppo Major Defeat to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, Serious Setback for US

Commenting on the success of the Syrian army and complete liberation of Syria's second-largest city, Aleppo, Kurdish political official Rezan Hiddo explained to Sputnik why it came as a serious defeat to Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey, while Professor Tim Anderson explained why it is the most serious setback for the US in 15 years.

"The liberation of Syria's major strategic center, Aleppo, from the armed opposition has changed the course of the Syrian war, propelled strengthening of the Syrian army and increased its morale," Kurdish political official, member of the Syrian Democratic Council Rezan Hiddo told Sputnik Turkiye. However it came as a serious defeat to those countries which have been supporting the rebel groups operating on the Syrian territory, he added.

"I mean Saudi Arabia, Qatar and particularly Turkey," he specified.

Imprisoned Al jazeera journalists; Mohammed Fahmy, Peter Greste - 7 years in jail; Baher Mohamed- 10 years in jail.

An Egyptian Court on Monday morning sentenced three AlJazeera journalists to jail. The court found Peter Greste, Mohamed Fahmy, and Baher Mohamed guilty of reporting false news and associating with the now outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.

Aljazeera had denied the allegations and the world has accused Egyptian authorities of simply clamping down on media freedom.

The twitter hashtag #Free‎AJStaff has been used globally to demand the release of the journalists who have been held since December, 2013.

Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi sworn in as Egypt president

Abdel Fattah al-Sisi was sworn in as president on Sunday following a landslide election almost a year after he deposed Egypt's first freely elected leader and crushed his Islamist supporters. The retired field marshal took the oath of office at the heavily guarded Constitutional Court and then left to attend a reception with foreign dignitaries.

Western countries alarmed by the brutal crackdown on dissent following the overthrow of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi last year mostly sent low level representatives.

Sisi scored a lopsided victory last month in an election boycotted by Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood and secular dissidents, also targeted by the army-installed government in the wide-ranging crackdown.

Soldiers and police deployed in force in the capital in anticipation of protests by the battered Brotherhood movement and possible militant attacks.
