Federal High Court Clears Fani-Kayode of Corruption Charges

A Federal High Court in Lagos has discharged and acquitted a former aviation minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, of corruption charges.

In her judgment, the judge​, Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia,​ said the prosecution’s case was “feeble” and failed to provide “copious evidence” linking Mr. Fani-Kayode to money laundering.

Mr. Fani-Kayode, whose trial began in 2008 before Justice Ramat Mohammed, was arraigned by the E​conomic and Financial Crimes Commission, E​FCC​,​ for allegedly laundering about N100 million while he was minister of culture and tourism and subsequently, aviation minister.

Libel Publication Against Chief Femi Fani Kayode, his lawyer writes Lai Mohammed, demands apology

A former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, has fired the first salvo in a series of threats and counter-threats of legal action between the ex-minister and Lai Mohammed, the spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress, APC, giving Mr. Mohammed a seven-day ultimatum to apologize to him.

In a letter titled “Libel Publication Against Chief Femi Fani Kayode Published in Vanguard Newspaper of the 30th of June 2014”, addressed to Mr. Mohammed, Mr. Fani-Kayode’s lawyer demanded an immediate retraction of a publication by the APC spokesperson, in three national newspapers approved by the former minister himself.

The letter, dated 7th July, 2014, also demanded that the retraction contain “an unreserved apology” to Mr. Fani-Kayode, offer for damages, and a seven day ultimatum to carry out the demands. “It will amount to a serious gamble if you treat this letter with levity, but if you so decide to do, the gamble is clearly yours,” said the letter signed by Nnenna Makwe, on behalf of Ahmed Raji and Co.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan sacks aviation minister stella oduah and three other ministers

The Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan has again on Wednesday sacked the country’s embattled Aviation Minister, Ms. Stella Oduah, and three other ministers, in the latest in a series of firings in recent times, the local media reported.

Also dropped from the cabinet are Police Affairs Minister Caleb Olubolade; Niger Delta Minister Godsday Orubebe and Minister of State for Finance Yerima Ngama.

No reasons were given for the sack, but at least two of the ministers have faced serious allegations of corruption.

Ms. Oduah landed in hot water after she was found to have approved the purchase of two bullet-proof cars for 255 million naira (US$1.5 million) by an agency under her ministry, in contravention of laid-down procedures.

The action has generated widespread anger across the country and triggered calls for her removal and prosecution.

In recent times, President Jonathan has also fired his Service Chiefs and relieved his Chief of Staff of his post.
