Osun House of Assembly to pass a bill to curb street hawking and illegal market set up

The Speaker of the state of Osun House of Assembly, Najeem Folasayo Salaam,  said the state House of Assembly is ready to put an end to street trading and illegal markets in the state. 

This was disclosed during the consideration of a bill on street trading and illegal markets set up on Thursday, March 24, at Osogbo, the Osun capital. 

Salaam stressed that it would be an offence for any person or group of persons to engage in street hawking or operate in illegal markets in the state once the bill becomes law. He said the law would promote the cleanliness of the state stating that this was one of the major aims of the government.

First, my prejudice: I am committed to the promotion, elevation and celebration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Just like lovers of Chief Awolowo, I wear caps with his chain logo.

I understand him and I have written tomes of articles to try to make people see him in as best a light as possible.

I should remind you. I was his Deputy Chief Press Secretary from 2003 to 2005 and his Chief Press Secretary from 2005 to 2007. 

When he left office in May 2007, I continued as his media adviser until I was elected into office as Executive Chairman of Ejigbo LCDA.

As a media and political strategist, I understand perfectly that the Presidency knows that Tinubu is one of the key strategists of the APC. He thinks outside the box and has rare expertise in plotting the logistics of electoral campaigns.So strategic that if his services to the party could be neutralized, the Presidency's plot to overrun the APC will be easier to achieve.

Second, Tinubu is one of the key grassroots mobilizers of the APC, particularly in the Southwest where he has demonstrated capacity to roll back the territorial gains of his party's opponents.

Ile-Ife Dynamites Explosion

Ile-Ife in Osun State was in the early hours of yesterday thrown into confusion following an explosion that rocked the city.It was reliably gathered that two explosive devices reportedly planted in two strategic locations at Agbedegbede area of the town exploded at 5.30 a.m., leaving residents of the area in shock and apprehension.

Although no life was lost in the explosion. No casualty or damaged property was reported.

Reports says people were in panic on Tuesday morning after an explosion went off in the More area of the town. Witnesses say an explosive device planted in a house went off. They said a police anti-bomb squad which arrived the area soon after the explosion defused other devices planted close by.

The Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Maishanu, who visited the scene of the explosion, confirmed that the blast was caused by dynamites planted by “mischievous persons.” Adding that nobody was killed or injured by the explosion as the dynamites were planted in an isolated area. 

Osun State: Violence Marred Voter Registration in Ile Ife

Crisis has erupted in the Ile-Ife area of Osun State on Thursday over the voter registration and cards collection  exercises ahead of the August 9 governorship election in the state.

Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission neither registered nor distributed cards to voters in some polling units. Among the areas affected are Obafemi Awolowo University, Aladanla, Yemo and Ede Road.

The registration exercise which started in Osun State last Wednesday was marred with violence on Tuesday. Violence erupted between members of the All Progressives Congress and Peoples Democratic Party on Wednesday, though both parties have denied their involvement.

Mystery Over OAU Law Student’s Death

How did Oladipupo Maranantha Ige die? This is the puzzle students of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, could not unravel last week when news of the rumoured suicide of the 400-Level Law student broke. OLUWAFEMI OGUNJOBI (400-Level Language Arts) reports.

“By the time you read this, I would have been dead.” That was the text the late Oladipupo Ige allegedly sent to his mother’s mobile phone on that fateful day.

His mother, it was learnt, did not get the text in time because her phone was off. Several minutes later, Oladipupo was found dead in his room. He allegedly committed suicide.

The incident happened last week in Asherifa Hostel, opposite the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State. The late Oladipupo was a 400-Level Law student.

But the police disagreed with the suicide theory. The Osun State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Folashade Odoro, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP), said the student died of “stomach ache”.
