IT’S TIME TO REVIEW INTERNATIONAL CONVENTIONS ON TERRORISTS & INSURGENTS, SAYS ACTING PRESIDENT OSINBAJO

IT IS time for the international community to take another look at the international legal instruments and conventions that govern warfare and conflicts in the light of the very unconventional and brutal operations of terrorists and insurgents around the world today.

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, expressed this view today during a meeting he hosted with members of the United Nations Security Council who are on a visit to the country.

‘We must, on a global scale look again at how to deal with these new challenges. We need to look at the governing conventions, what type of legal categories, recognition of law we should give them (to the perpetrators of terror and insurgents). We need to re-examine how to deal with these individuals according to law,” Osinbajo, himself a law professor noted.

United Nations Security Council to vote on improved Syria aid access

The United Nations Security Council is set to adopt a resolution Monday authorizing humanitarian convoys to serve millions of Syrian civilians by traveling from neighboring Turkey, Jordan and Iraq, according to Agence France-Presse.
After weeks of negotiations, Australia, Jordan and Luxembourg drafted the text for a vote.

Damascus' ally Russia, which has already used its veto on four Syria-related resolutions since the conflict began in March 2011, has no plans to do so this time.

U.N. Security Council blacklists Boko Haram leader, splinter group

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The United Nations Security Council sanctioned the leader of Nigeria's Boko Haram and a splinter group on Wednesday, the first individual and entity to be designated by the world body since the Islamist militant group was blacklisted, diplomats said.

Leader Abubakar Shekau and Boko Haram faction Ansaru will be banned from international travel and their assets frozen under the U.N. al Qaeda sanctions list.

The Senate today considered a Motion on the Abduction of School Children in Chibok, Borno State. The motion, sponsored by the Senate Leader, Sen. Victor Ndoma Egba and 107 other Senators, was passed as a Resolution of the Senate to: 

• Condemn as callous, the abduction of the school girls. 

• Urge the Federal Government and all Security Agencies to intensify efforts on immediate rescue of the abducted students of Federal Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State.

Ukraine crisis: Crimea peninsula turns to Russia

Ukraine's government appealed for Western help on Tuesday to stop Moscow annexing Crimea but the Black Sea peninsula, overrun by Russian troops, seemed fixed on a course that could formalise rule from Moscow within days.

With their own troops in Crimea effectively prisoners in their bases, the new authorities in Kiev painted a sorry picture of the military bequeathed them by the pro-Moscow president overthrown two weeks ago. They announced the raising of a new National Guard to be drawn from volunteers among veterans.
