Bomb explosions near University of Maiduguri keep students, staff awake - PREMIUM TIMES
Thunderous sounds suspected to be from bomb explosions and continuous shooting around the University of Maiduguri scared students and staff on campus all Friday night. Many of the students and staff stayed awake till dawn.
The explosion, according to PREMIUM TIMES checks, started at about 2 a.m.
Some students said the sounds woke them up, while those that were awake and reading for the ongoing second semester exams said they were terrified.
A 200-level student of the University, Halima Abdul, told PREMIUM TIMES on phone that “we don’t know from where the explosion and shooting occurred and we could not even run because it is dark and dangerous to do so. It happened around 2 a.m.; I was not asleep then”.
Halima said the university’s Dean of Students Affairs visited them in the hostel in the early hours of Saturday to assure them of safety, even as he warned of dangers in trying to run from the school.
A security official who spoke to PREMIUM TIMES but asked not to be named because it was not his role to speak to the press said the shooting had nothing to do with the university. He said the shooting occurred in two villages about 12km away from university campus.

Boko Haram Force Students to Flee Borno State
Fear of endless Boko Haram attacks in Borno state and the latest attack on the Nigerian Army formation in Maiduguri caused panic on the campus of the University of Maiduguri, Borno State, on Sunday . Many of the students has been fleeing the institution.Sunday incidence in Maduguri fuelled speculations that the insurgents have invaded the campus and detonated explosive devices.

It was also reported that two students died on Friday when stray bullets hit them during the attack by the Boko Haram insurgents on the military barracks with rocket propelled grenades. However the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Mala Daura has said there was no plan to close down the institution as it was not under any threat of insurgency attack. He also cautioned students against fleeing the campus in fear, insisting that the authorities had put all measures in place to ensure their security.
The VC said the rumour of possible attack on the campus by Boko Haram was “unfounded and misplaced,” assuring that the institution was safe. He gave the assurance through the institution’s Chief Information Officer, Malam Tanko Mohammed.
Asking the students not to flee but to settle down for their academic activities, he said, “There is no cause for alarm. The university management is working in collaboration with security agencies to ensure security for the entire university community. We have quite a good number of security personnel around the university and as such, parents and guardians should know that their children are safe.
“We have no intention to close the university as academic activities continue unhindered. We urged the students to continue their studies without fear because the security situation in Maiduguri is now calm and normalcy is returning.”
But the truth is can anyone really predict where and when the insurgents may attack, or can the institution withstands the and repel if they attack?
