CORRUPTION:HISTORICAL ANTECEDENTS

1. In 1947, late Chief Obafemi Awolowo wrote that “Corruption is the greatest defect of the Native Court system.” He complained that not only did judges take bribes, people used their connections to enrich themselves and avoid punishment for their crimes. He also wrote that in the north, a new Emir always removed all the people appointed by the previous Emir and replaced them with his own people.

2. In 1950, Abubakar Tafewa Balewa said ‘the twin curses of bribery and corruption pervade every rank and department of government’. At that time, the word ‘awoof’ was already being used to describe how civil servants used their positions to enrich themselves.

A government worker was sacked because he IMPLEMENTED a law/regulation the government has already signed into existence. Simply because his implementation touched on some big man in the church. You are happy. Someone even said "he not only offended the church, he offended God". Another person said he was sacked because the minister said Obazee should "hold-on" on the implementation of a law that is already signed. No noise from the usual quarters because.... "touch not my anointed and do my prophet no harm". Great! Clap yourself. Chop knuckle.


What you do not see is the fact that this kind of action is what makes a police commissioner not able to effect the arrest of a child kidnapper in the north, because the Emir has an interest and would call an AIG that would tell the commissioner to "hold-on" on the implementation of the arrest of the kidnapper.

Emir of Kano, Sanusi, begs Jonathan as Police ends siege on palace

The newly-crowned Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, has shelved his public defiance and begged President Goodluck Jonathan, personally and through intermediaries, to lift police siege on his palace and forgive him his trespasses, presidency officials, associates of some of the intermediaries and sources within the Kano State Government and the Emir’s palace have confirmed the Emir's pleading.

Police ended the siege late Thursday, four days after Mr. Sanusi, a former governor of the Central Bank, emerged monarch of the powerful Kano emirate. Police authorities deny neither the blockade nor its lifting was on the instructions of the president.

Mr. Jonathan has been embroiled in months of acrimony with the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Kano Government denies reports of new emir

The Kano State Government has denied rumours making the rounds, especially on the social media, that a new emir has been selected to replace late Ado Bayero.

There are widespread reports that the son of the late emir, Sunusi Ado-Bayero, had been selected.

Mr. Bayero is considered a frontline contender for the position, as is a former governor of the Central Bank, Lamido Sanusi.

The Senior Special Assistant on Media, to Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, Jaafar Jaafar, said on  Sunday afternoon that Mr. Kwankwaso was yet to make the announcement.
