Appeals of Suarez and the Uruguayan FA rejected, sanctions upheld

The FIFA Appeal Committee has decided to reject the appeals lodged by both the Uruguayan player Luis Suarez and the Uruguayan FA, and to confirm the decision rendered by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee on 25 June 2014 in its entirety.

The terms of the decision taken by the FIFA Appeal Committee were communicated to the player and the Uruguayan FA today.

Balmo Forest Operation: Troops Unearth More Weapons From Balmo Forest’s Underground Armories

The Nigerian Army has confirmed that its mopping up operations in Balmo Forest is yielding more discoveries of arms stockpiled in underground cells.

Director Defence Information, Major-General Chris Olukolade, in a statement said the  troops who have been excavating various sites in the forest in search of hidden weapons, and  have so far recovered over 10 rifles along with parts and accessories as well as more than 80 General Purpose Machine Guns, tubes of Rocket Propelled Grenades and Launchers, cables, wires and thousands of rounds of assorted ammunition.

Following reported cases of human rights abuses and acts of unprofessional conducts perpetrated by men of the Nigerian Army and Police Force, a report on the Vetting and Selection of UN Peacekeepers has demanded a “prompt development of a National Policy on Peacekeeping Support Operations in line with the 2012 UN policy on human rights screening.

The report, which is a brainchild of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) in conjunction with the Open Society Foundations, observed that this is imperative following cases of human rights violation by Nigerian troops and police officers in peace-keeping assignments.

The Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola presented yesterday 20 superior Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) worth more than N1.3billion to the police command.

Presenting the vehicles to the police, Aregbesola expressed worry at what he called the Federal Government’s penchant for playing politics with crucial security matters.

He appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to separate politics from security by granting the state a short code for its emergency centre.
