PRESIDENT BUHARI MOURNS GENERAL ABISOYE

President Muhammadu Buhari extends heartfelt condolences to the family of Major-General Emmanuel Abisoye (Rtd), former General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2nd Infantry Division and 3rd Infantry Division of the Nigerian Army, who has passed away at the age of 81.

The President also commiserates with the government and people of Kogi State on the death of their illustrious son, a former Federal Commissioner for Health and member of the Supreme Military Council.

OUR FREEDOM IS COMING TOMORROW!

Noble Nigerians, I salute Kumalo ‘Sarafina’ who, reminiscing the dark days of Apartheid in South Africa, said: Freedom Is Coming Tomorrow. True, Nigeria is in a quandary of abyssal descent. Yet, I say hope; freedom is coming tomorrow.

Yes, the camarilla at independence: stunted by incompetence and debauchery, derailed by despicable power games and proclivity to acquisitiveness, was unwilling, if not incompetent of saving our fledgling new nation. Nigeria was mutilated on the altar of cupidity and egocentricity.
Yet I say: freedom is coming tomorrow.

The Nigerian military and select few won a glorious Civil War victory of oil wells and oil blocks for themselves and a pyrrhic victory of poverty for the Nigerian people.
Albeit, I say: our freedom is coming tomorrow.

June 12: Sacrifices, Unity & Politics of Division by M.B.O Owolowo

Better late than never some would say, how honourable it would have been if Obasanjo had made this statement whilst he was President and honoured M.K.O Abiola accordingly. Maybe Obasanjo has come to accept the bitter reality that June 12 is symbolic and without the sacrifices of the likes of Abiola, he would never have returned to power in 1999.

But, this isn’t about the man who 'blessed' Nigeria with 'Goodluck', but something far greater. It is about sacrifices and defending our unity.

Ukraine ready to sign EU trade deal ‘immediately’ - Poroshenko

Ukraine’s President-elect Petro Poroshenko is ready to sign a deal establishing free trade between the EU and Ukraine, right after his inauguration on June 7. The agreement lies at the heart of the Ukraine crisis and he hopes it will help “restore peace".

"I'm ready to sign the economic part of the Association Agreement and to enter a free trade zone with the EU immediately after the inauguration," Poroshenko said during a meeting in Warsaw on Wednesday with Austrian President Heinz Fischer.

Kiev signed the political part of the trade agreement, which will break down barriers between Ukraine’s $145 billion economy and Europe’s nearly $17 trillion economy.

It had been reported that Poroshenko may be hesitant to sign the agreement, as he may need some time to address Ukraine’s desperate internal problems first, and not rush into foreign partnerships.

I am a Nigerian citizen concerned about the welfare of my own sovereign state, and you madam, far from being in a legal state of war with Nigeria, are the wife of its elected president. By some bizarre twist of circumstances you could well be the most important person in Nigeria today, certainly the most important person in government, by virtue or in spite of your constitutionally indeterminate position as First lady, with all the arrogated powers appurtenant.

NATO Secretary-General warns Moscow against further intervention in Ukraine

NATO Secretary-General has warned Russia that further intervention in Ukraine would be a “historic mistake” with grave consequences.

Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Moscow must pull back troops it has massed on the Ukrainian border. On Tuesday, Ukraine regained control of one of the government buildings occupied by pro-Russian activists in the east of the country.

Bandits and insurgents operating in parts of the North are ferried in by helicopters along with their weapons likely from foreign lands to launch their attacks, the Senate heard in Abuja yesterday.
During a debate on a motion on the violence in several northern states, Senator Abu Ibrahim from Katsina revealed that attackers of some of the affected places were not local people but were air-dropped from somewhere else along with their supplies.
