NAFDAC pledges partnership on ensuring drug-free Super Eagles at 2014 World Cup

The Director-General of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Paul Orhii on Tuesday pledged that the agency will partner with sports authorities in the country to ensure the Super Eagles are drug-free at Brazil 2014 World Cup.
Represented by the agency’s Director of Special Duties, Abubakar Jimoh, NAFDAC Boss, made the pledge at a seminar organised by the FCT Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) in Abuja that there were plans to sensitise the players to this.

According to him, the players need to be sensitised to the need to be drug-free both before and during the World Cup.’’ NAN reports that the Super Eagles are scheduled to participate at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil from June 12 to July 13.
NAFDAC would also partner with FCT SWAN in curbing the illicit use of drugs by athletes, players who engage in the use of banned drugs get undue advantage over other competitors. So, the use of banned drugs by sportsmen should be discouraged. So the agency intended to use the Super Eagles as role models to a lot of youths across the country in promoting its fight against drug counterfeiting, he said.
He said: “We know sports, especially football in Nigeria, as a unifying factor. When the Super Eagles are playing, Nigerians forget all their differences and come together as one.“This is very unique, because no other sector can boast of this great tool than sports. So, NAFDAC has concluded plans to delve into sports as a tool to sensitise the people about the dangers of drug counterfeiting.
“Because, people need to be aware that fake drugs affect everyone in one way or the other. So, we need to fight this menace together,” Orhii said
