... As Teachers Express Support
The re-election bid of Ekiti State governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, got further boost yesterday with the open support of the numerous beneficiaries of his administration’s Social Welfare Scheme for the Elderly. One of the beneficiaries of the monthly N5,000 stipend for the aged, who spoke on their behalf, Mrs Beatrice Kolawole, said the prayers and love of the old people to the governor would see his re-election bid through.
Kolawole said: “It is only if Fayemi withdraws from the race that he will not come back to office because of the prayers of the old people for his success at the election. “We shall all vote for you and I want you to be assured of our votes. If the law of the land permits you, we want you to be there for as long as possible. “We appreciate you and we pray that God will keep you there for us.”
The aged woman spoke at Ikogosi Ekiti during the governor’s campaign tour of communities in Ekiti West Council area. Teachers under the auspices of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, and students groups in the state also used the occasion to reiterate their support for the governor’s re-election in the June 21 election in the state.
At the campaign tour which took the All Progressives Congress, APC, standard-bearer to Ipole- Iloro, Ikogosi and Erijiyan, the governor harped on the need for the people to be vigilant on election day and protect their votes from being stolen.
Fayemi expressed confidence that the various projects executed in the communities would motivate the electorate to re-elect the APC administration for the development being witnessed to continue.
The NUT in the council area, under the chairmanship of Mr Fatai Oluyede, said teachers were solidly behind Fayemi because of the various incentives they had enjoyed under his administration.
Oluyede identified special allowances for teachers in the rural areas and those teaching core subjects, distribution of laptops to teachers and regular payment of leave bonuses and salaries to teachers as those areas that their welfare have been taken care of.
He also hailed the governor for giving new cars to teachers, stressing that the governor remained the only candidate that teachers would vote for at the poll. A student leader in the community, Oluwatosin Ogunkuade, hailed Fayemi for transforming Ikogosi Warm Spring to an international standard which has boosted the image of the town.
Ogunkuade assured Fayemi of not less than 90 per cent of votes in the community in gratitude of Fayemi’s wonder in Ikogosi. In his remarks, Fayemi said apart from what had been done at the Ikogosi Warm Spring resort, indigenes of the town had also benefited from the construction of five-kilometre road project, palace construction, creation of job opportunities, among others.
He revealed his administration’s readiness to commence work on the second phase of the Ikogosi Warm Spring resort which, according to him, would include a hotel, a golf course and a game reserve. Fayemi promised to reconstruct Aramoko-Erijiyan-Ikogosi Road while also putting in good condition roads leading to farmsteads.
He also disclosed that soldiers would be brought to protect the people and the warm spring resort in the area, adding that a police station at the resort is under construction to boost security. The governor urged the electorate to be vigilant and never underestimate those he referred to as election-riggers and vote robbers and charged them to protect their votes and cast them massively for the APC which he described as the party of the masses.
