Leadership and management must go hand in hand. They are not the same thing. But they are necessarily linked, and complementary. Any effort to separate the two is likely to cause more problems than it solves.Still, much ink has been spent delineating the differences. The manager’s job is to plan, organize and coordinate. The leader’s job is to inspire and motivate. In his book “On Becoming a Leader,” Warren Bennis composed a list of the differences:

(a) The manager administers; the leader innovates.

(b) The manager is a copy; the leader is an original.

10 Things That Leadership Is Not

For many people leadership is a big nebulous word, one that can mean many different things to different people and across all cultures. 

The concept of leadership can even be a little frightening. And there are plenty of leaders who would never describe themselves using that word. 

They would tell you that they’re just doing what needs to be done. When it comes to leadership there is no magic formula or single way of doing things. Every leader is unique, although there are some common threads. In some ways leadership is easier to define by talking about what it isn’t: 

1. Leadership is not about you. It’s about your followers, your employees, your team. The best leaders devote almost all their energy to inspiring and empowering others. Taking care of their people is a big part of being a leader. 

PRESS STATEMENT ON CURRENT FUEL SITUATION IN NIGERIA BY MINISTER OF STATE FOR PETROLEUM RESOURCES, IBE KACHIKWU

We have just finished a meeting of various stakeholders presided over by His Excellency, the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The meeting had in attendance the Leadership of the Senate, House of Representatives, Governors Forum, and Labour Unions (NLC, TUC, NUPENG, and PENGASSAN).

The meeting reviewed:

1. The current fuel scarcity and supply difficulties in the country.

2. The exorbitant prices being paid by Nigerians for the product. These prices range on the average from N150 to N250 per litre currently.

3. The meeting also noted that the main reason for the current problem is the inability of importers of petroleum products to source foreign exchange at the official rate due to the massive decline of foreign exchange earnings of the federal government. As a result, private marketers have been unable to meet their approximate 50% portion of total national supply of PMS.

A Military In Tatters And The Senseless Onslaught Against The Media, By Dele Agekameh

It is most apt today for this column to open with the timeless saying “Those who the gods want to destroy, they first make mad”. Otherwise, how would someone describe the unpalatable development that has been going on since the early hours of last Friday across the country? Last Friday, the Nigerian press came under a coordinated assault by security agents who had laid ambush for the daily newspapers on the highways and distribution centres. The assault bears all the trappings of the dark days of military dictatorship as soldiers claiming “orders from above”, intercepted, seized and, in some cases, destroyed newspapers on sight.

According to reports, soldiers who laid ambush at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, confiscated copies of the The PUNCH, The Nation, Daily Trust and Leadership, while , in some cases, wrappers and cover pages of The PUNCH were damaged. In various statements issued after the early morning rampage, Leadership reported that soldiers intercepted and destroyed copies of the day’s publication at the Kaduna toll gate. The Nation too saw its vans ambushed in Abuja, Benin-Warri Road, Port Harcourt, Kaduna-Kano Road and Nasarawa-Jos Road. In Benin, Edo State, soldiers stormed the Nigerian Union of Journalists Press Centre to disrupt activities as they stopped vehicles, hunting for some national dailies. And this is still an ongoing thing.

Armed Soldiers Invade Newspaper Centres In Osun

Armed soldiers on Friday invaded Newspapers’ distribution centres in Osun State for a-yet-to be ascertained alleged implicating report.

The soldiers who stormed the centre as early as 6am in a truck approached the newspaper distributors and sales agents looking for the incriminating reports in some newspapers.

But the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State chapter in a swift reaction condemned the act saying the action was akin to the dark days of the military era in the country when press was subjected to humiliation.

Deji Elumoye, the chairman of the union said, NUJ noted the development with concerns saying similar actions by the soldiers were reported in some states.

Military Siege On The Media: Statement By The Newpaper Proprietors Association Of Nigeria

Following the harassment of newspaper vendors/distributors and the seizure of large volumes of newspapers by soldiers who initially targeted the following newspapers: LEADERSHIP, DAILY TRUST, The NATION and PUNCH, but later extended the siege to all major newspapers in the country for the second day today, the Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN) held an emergency meeting in Abuja on June 7, 2014 with representatives of vendors and distributors and resolved as follows:
1. The NPAN unequivocally condemns this attack of FREE SPEECH by soldiers, in Abuja, Kaduna, Kano, Jos, Maiduguri, Ibadan amongst other cities, claiming to be acting on "orders". This assault on FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION through the stoppage of distribution of newspapers is inconsistent with the values of any democratic society and the Constitution of The Federal Republic of Nigeria. We therefore call upon the military authorities to lift the siege immediately and call the soldiers to order.

Why Nigerian military blocks newspapers distribution in Abuja, Lagos

The Nigerian military on Saturday continued its onslaught on newspapers by sealing off the popular major distribution depot in the Area 1 District of Abuja, from where all newspapers are distributed to agents and vendors across the Nigerian capital. Witnesses said soldiers in about seven trucks laid siege on the distribution point, preventing any kind of newspaper circulation from taking place.

The military attack on Nigerian newspapers commenced on Friday with soldiers confiscating thousands of Nigerian newspapers including Leadership, The Nation, and Punch newspapers.

Media houses promptly devised an alternate and secret means to ensure their papers get to the public in the Nigerian capital promptly; a reminder of the days of military dictatorship.

INSIGHT FOR EFFECTIVE PRAYING

Many people love the guidance of the Holy Spirit but are not ready for His
leadership, we should be ready for both “I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. “Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, [that] shall He speak: and He will shew you things to come”.

His leadership is to teach, correct and rebuke us where necessary. These will only make us to be the person He desires us to be.

Anybody who is enjoying the leadership of the Holy Spirit and His guidance will hear from God before it happens, he will see what others do not see, he will not fall into the error of Satan, doing God’s work will be easy for him because he will work with the master plan of God.

Holy Spirit, He is God in Spirit, this enables Him to be everywhere helping the believers to achieve the original purpose and plan of God.

We should learn how to invite Him into our lives, worship Him and learn to listen to His gentle voice.

LET US PRAY

1.     God the Holy Spirit, take Your abode in me.

2.     Father, baptize me afresh with Your Spirit.

3.     Holy Spirit of God, direct the rest of my life for Your glory.

4.     In Jesus name, I receive fresh fire of God.

5.     Holy Spirit, always lead my life as You wish.

6.     Endow Your gifts upon my life in Jesus name.

7.     Holy Spirit, please; let me hear when You speak.

8.     Holy Spirit, uphold me not to sin against You.

9.     Holy Spirit, always do Your work through me.

10.   Those who need baptism of the Holy Spirit should come before the altar for ministration.
