Auto crash: 9 burnt to death in Jigawa - NSCDC

Nine persons were confirmed dead while many others sustained injuries in a ghastly motor accident that occurred along Ringim-Kano Road in Jigawa State at the weekend.

The accident, which occurred at about 4pm at  Ganji-gebi village, seven kilometres to Ringim Local Government Area of the state, involved two buses, a Sharon (Volskwagen) and Hiace (Toyota) with registration number JHN 82 XA fully loaded with passengers.


The state commandant of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Mr.. Muhammad Gidado, who confirmed the incident, said his men rescued the injured and rushed them to a nearby hospital.

He said some of the deceased, who were burnt beyond recognition, were buried in a mass grave.

The commandant condoled with the families of the deceases and prayed God to give their families fortitude to bear the lost.

A witness, Malam Mustapha, said the accident occurred when one of the tyres of the Sharon bus burst and in the process collided with the Hiace bus, leading to an explosion.

Mustapha confirmed that six of the passengers were burnt beyond recognition while the others died at the Ringim General Hospital, adding that five of the survivors were at the same hospital while seven were referred to Dan Masara Specialist Hospital, Dutse for urgent treatment.

Meanwhile, the NSCDC commandant has warned drivers of the need to stop wasting human lives and destroying property unnecessarily due to reckless and unprofessional driving.
