Benue people have alleged that suspected Fulani mercenaries launched attacks on residents of a community with chemical weapons, claiming that the fifteen persons that were killed in Shengev community, Gwer West local government area had no gun wounds on their bodies but foamed from their mouths.
A relative of one of the victims disclosed that his elder brother was discovered dead outside their house, explaining that after, “we observed him we could not see any trace of wound or gun shot on him. We found foam on his mouth, which suggests that a chemical weapon or poisoning substance was used on him.”
Gwer West local government chairman, Mrs. Eunice Abajwa, who confirmed the invasion of the area, said she had so far received 10 corpses without wounds and had taken them to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi for autopsy to ascertain what led to their death. But the hospital authorities told said they were yet to receive the corpses for the said test.
The state police spokesman, Daniela Ezeala, who said only six died in the area, added that the police were waiting for medical examination to authenticate whether the people were killed with chemical weapons.
