The Pope of Catholic Church, Pope Francis is celebrating his first year in office. Argentinean-born pontiff is currently on a week-long spiritual retreat with cardinals and bishops in the Alban Hills near Rome.
On Thursday, while marking the first anniversary of his election, Pope through a tweeted message on his twitter account to his 12 million followers, says “Please pray for me”.
The tweet from the @Pontifex account, which echoed the pontiff’s appeal in his first Angelus prayer last year, was the only official acknowledgement from the Vatican of the anniversary, which Francis was spending on a spiritual retreat in south of Rome.
Italian opinion polls give Pope Francis the highest popularity rating of any recent pontiff.
Pope Francis being the first Latin American – and the first Jesuit – to lead the Roman Catholic Church is believed to has shown a change of style rather than of substance. Since taking office, pilgrims have been arriving in Rome in unprecedented numbers.
He is also riding high on social media, with 12 million following him in nine languages on Twitter.
Francis’s approval rating has remained high despite a recent UN report accusing the Catholic Church of systematically covering up for tens of thousands of child-abusing priests reported to the cardinals.
