Cameroonian striker Albert Ebossé killed by 'projectile' thrown from stands

Hayatour calls for tough sanctions against fan that killed Algerian league’s top goal scorer

Cameroonian striker Albert Ebossé died on Saturday night after he was hit by an object thrown by a fan at the end of a league game in Algeria.

Ebossé, who played for JS Kabylie, was hit in the head by an object at the end of a home game between USM Alger. He died later at a local hospital, according to reports.

He had scored from the penalty spot to get his team’s only goal in the 2-1 defeat, the second game of the season, which took place in the northern Algerian city of Tizi Ouzou.
The president of the Confederation of African Football, Issa Hayatour, called for sanctions against the fan that killed Ebossé.

“African football cannot be the breeding ground for hooliganism whatsoever,” he said. “We expect exemplary sanctions to be taken against this grave act of violence.”

The Algerian department of the interior and local government has asked for an investigation to be opened into Ebossé’s death, minister Tayeb Belaiz said on Saturday night.

Ebossé joined JS Kabylie in 2013 and was the Algerian top scorer in Algeria’s top flight league last season. His 17 goals helped his team to finish second in the league to Saturday night’s opponent USM Alger.
