Acting Malaysian transport minister Hishammuddin Hussein was handed a hand-written note during a press conference saying that satellite images had found an object 22m long and 30m wide.
He told the assembled journalists that the debris had been seen in the southern corridor in the Indian ocean, but did not give more details about its location.
The Chinese are expected to give more information regarding the finding over the next few hours. However, because of the large size of the object, some experts are sceptical that it could belong to a plane.
It is likely that had there been an impact, an airliner would have broken up into smaller pieces.
