Boko Haran: NIS to deploy patrol corps in borders

The Nigeria Immigration Service on Sunday said it was set to deploy members of its special border patrol corps in the nation’s borders as part of measures to check illegal migration and terrorism. The NIS Public Relations Officer, Emeka Obua, said this on Sunday.

Obua said, “We have graduated 1,000 special patrol border corps personnel and they will soon be deployed to the nation’s borders. The corps is part of the proposals to the Federal Government by the Comptroller-General. “Other components of the proposals include yearly recruitment of 5,000 personnel into the service for at least three years and the setting up of border patrol technology to check illegal migration and influx of terrorists and criminals into the country.”

He said the border patrol corps would be backed with modern border security technologies, including electronic sensors that could detect human movement particularly at the 1,497 illegal routes being used by terrorists and foreigners that did not want to be profiled by the immigration service.

Obua explained that the corps was not a new creation, noting that it was part of the recommendation of the Justice Nnaemeka Aniagolu Commission of Inquiry on the Maitasine riot, which unfortunately was not implemented by past governments.
Asked if the borders in the North-East zones had been closed to check influx of suspected terrorists and other criminals, the immigration spokesman said the closure of the borders was part of the State of Emergency declared by the Federal Government in the area.
