PRESS STATEMENT: WE DEMAND IMMEDIATE REVERSAL OF THE HIKE IN THE PRICES OF TRANSPORT BY RAIL - UAD

WE DEMAND IMMEDIATE REVERSAL OF THE HIKE IN THE PRICES OF TRANSPORT BY RAIL!

The United Action for Democracy (UAD), Lagos State Chapter condemns strongly the recent inhuman and unnecessary hike in the prices of transport by rail in Lagos in its environs.

Previously the cost of transport by rail from Iddo to Alagbado, Ijoko used to cost 500 naira for first class and 150 naira for economy class. But with the new hike in rail transport price, the first class is now 750 naira and economy class 230 naira.
This is against the background that Lagosians live in a permanently retrogressing standard of living following the elitist and anti-poor governance that subsists!

The essence of instituting government at all continues to be betrayed by all tiers of government. We dare say this because governance has become about sucking the poor dry!

Rail transport is largely a means accessed by the poor, working and toiling people. We are prompted to ask what exactly is government doing in terms of its constitutional duty and sworn oath to prioritize welfare, protection of live and property of the citizenry.

Lagosians and Nigerians generally are over-taxed and pay for every service they have to access; from housing, education, water, electricity, food, transport, health, security, just name it! We pay!!

We therefore demand for a reversal of the hike in prices of transport by rail to the old prices. And we insist that government become more pro-poor, pro-working and toiling people in policy development.

The poor, working and toiling people have been bearing the brunt of the extravagance, kleptomania and misplaced priority in governance. Enough is Enough!
