Rescued Boko Haram Victims: 61 Infants Hospitalized And 478 Malnourished Kids For Special Care

Sixty one critically malnourished infants have been hospitalized on the orders of Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima after he relocated 478 children and 219 adults, all of them malnurished due to two years captivity in the hands of Boko Haram insurgents before they were rescued by the Nigerian Military. 

The victims were moved from Bama to a special care unit in Maiduguri on Monday. Dozens of buses brought conveyed them to a newly opened special care unit in Maiduguri.

The 61 infants now hospitalized at Umaru Shehu Specialist Hospital, owned by the State Government in Maiduguri, are undergoing medical care arising from extreme deprivation of food. They were ‎part of the 478 children moved from Bama alongside 219 adults also malnurished. The adults consist of 196 women, some of whom gave birth to part of the 478 children. The rest of the adults are 23 men, looking thin.

The attention of the Nigerian Army has been drawn to an online publication in the Daily Post of today bearing the by-line of one Mr. Wale titled “Boko Haram Not Controlling Any Local Government In Borno”.

In it was alleged that “the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, has dismissed insinuations that two local governments in Borno state are under the control of Islamist group, Boko Haram”, contrary to an alleged assertion by “Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, who told the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal, over the weekend, that Boko Haram were in control of Abadam and Mobbar local governments in the state when he played host to Lawal, who led a six-man delegation of the Federal Government sent by President Muhammadu Buhari to commiserate with Borno and Adamawa states following the recent suicide attacks targeted at Mosques in the two states”. The report further alleged that General Buratai disputed the claims by the Governor.

Abducted girls must be found, Jonathan gives Shettima marching order

Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State has been giving a marching order that abducted girls must be found. 

President Goodluck Jonathan gave this mandate to the governor during an all night meeting that ended in the early hours of Sunday.

The meeting had in attendance the President, Vice president, Senate President, Secretary to the Government and Service Chiefs and many others.

The meeting began at 9.00pm Saturday when President Goodluck Jonathan arrived.

Shettima arrived in company of the Borno State Commissioner of Education, the principal of the Government Secondary School, Chibok and some parents of the abducted girls.

There was confusion today in Chibok, Borno state, when parents of abducted schoolgirls at Government Girls Secondary School insisted that 85 more girls than admitted by officials were abducted from the school.

The Borno state commissioner for education and the principal of the school had claimed that 129 girls were kidnapped when the suspected Boko Haram gunmen stormed their dormitories on April 14.

Of the number, the officials said, 28 initially escaped while another 16 broke free from the abductors days later. The remaining 85 are still missing, they claimed.

However, parents told Borno state Governor, Kashim Shettima, who visited Chibok Monday, in defiance of security warnings, that by their records, 234 girls were abducted, suggesting that 190 of the pupils are yet to be found.

There is controversy over the rescue of abducted school girls in Borno with the state government and the school principal faulting the military’s claim that most of the pupils have been freed

The claim by military officials in Abuja on Wednesday that 107 abducted girls of Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS) Chibok were freed is a huge lie, Borno  government officials, the management of the school and residents have said. 

The Principal of Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Asabe Kwambura, told PREMIUM TIMES Thursday morning that the military’s claim was false. 

“There is nothing in the military statement that is true about our abducted girls,”  Mrs. Kwambura said. “Up till now we are still waiting and praying for the safe return of the students; all I know is that we have only 14 of them, and the security people especially the Vigilante and the well meaning volunteers of Gwoza are still out searching for them.”

The security agencies have ordered the restrictions into the movement of some Nigerians who are currently the prime targets of the Boko Haram Islamist Jihadists in the country.

The security sources revealed that on the Boko Haram's 'target for death' list are eminent personalities which includes the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa'ad Abubakar, former-President Shehu Shagari, former military President Ibrahim Babangida, former Head of State Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar and others.

The security "protective" restriction will also cover prominent emirs, governors, former-governors, ministers, former-ministers and some highly-placed Nigerians, and that the concerned individuals are to depend on travel approval and advisory from state security apparatus before visiting any part of the Northeast – the birth place of the Boko Haram sects, the headquarters of trouble spots in country which has claimed thousands of lives.
