N1.2bn Fraud: Dariye’s Witness Tells Court, Ex-Gov Wrong to Divert Funds

A former Plateau State House of Assembly member, Geoffrey Teme, on June 27, 2016 told a Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court, Gudu, Abuja, that it was wrong for Joshua Dariye, a former governor of the state, to divert the state’s ecological fund for personal gains.

Under cross-examination by prosecuting counsel, Rotimi Jacobs, SAN, Teme, the second defence witness, admitted that “it was wrong for anybody to pay government money into his personal account”.

Fresh facts emerged yesterday that more than 60 top Nigerians may lose assets and cash laundered in the United Kingdom.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) may soon submit a list of those convicted, under probe, the fleeing suspects and those watch-listed to the relevant agencies in the UK.

The UK was said to be in custody of over £40 million stolen funds recovered from some Nigerian government officials in 2008.

The attention of the Nigerian Army has been drawn to an online publication in the Daily Post of today bearing the by-line of one Mr. Wale titled “Boko Haram Not Controlling Any Local Government In Borno”.

In it was alleged that “the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, has dismissed insinuations that two local governments in Borno state are under the control of Islamist group, Boko Haram”, contrary to an alleged assertion by “Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, who told the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal, over the weekend, that Boko Haram were in control of Abadam and Mobbar local governments in the state when he played host to Lawal, who led a six-man delegation of the Federal Government sent by President Muhammadu Buhari to commiserate with Borno and Adamawa states following the recent suicide attacks targeted at Mosques in the two states”. The report further alleged that General Buratai disputed the claims by the Governor.

Nigeria Military to protect Ploice Facilities Across the Country as Boko Haram attack Gwoza Police Training Academy

Following an attack on one of the country’s foremost police training institutions, the Police Academy, Gwoza, Borno State by Boko Haram on Wednesday, the Nigeria Police has reached out to the military to protect its facilities in the North.

The military would deploy soldiers to guard police barracks, primary and secondary schools, as well as its training colleges. Besides the college at Gwoza, other NPF training institutions in the country include the police colleges in Jos, Plateau State; Ikeja, Lagos State; Kaduna, Kaduna State; Maiduguri, Borno State; Oji-River and Police Detective College, Enugu; as well as the Police College of Information Technology, Abeokuta.

Others are the Police Mobile Training School, Ila-Orangun, Osun State; Mounted/Dog Training Schools, Jos, Plateau State; Traffic Training School, Ikeja; the Police School of Music, Ikeja; Police Schools of Communication, Ikeja, Lagos and Kaduna; the Police School of Anti-Terrorism, Nonwa-Tai, Rivers State; the Police Training School, Sokoto; Police Training School, Bauchi; Police Training School, Minna, Niger State; and Police Training School, Jos.

Residents allege existence of terrorist camps in Plateau villages

Some communities in Ryiom and Barkin ladi government areas of Plateau State have cried out to security agencies for help over alleged plans by Fulani militants to launch fresh attacks on them. One of the communities, Shonong, in a petition sent to the state commissioner of police, said that several of its men were killed while working on their farms last month.

A petition signed by Shonong youth leader, Yohanna Ciroma described the situation in the area as ‘silent terrorism’, saying “our communities has been under siege by armed Fulani men.”

The concern villagers said they had discovered a trainiing camp of some unknown gunmen behind a rocky hill in Rim, near Riyom.

NEMA says at least 3 persons died in fresh Jos explosion

The National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) says at least three people were killed and three others injured in the Saturday night explosion near a football viewing centre at Bauchi Road in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.

NEMA Coordinator for the North Central  , Abdulsalam Abubakar, on Saturday night told the BBC Hausa service that the explosion killed three people and injured three others who were rushed to hospital, adding that the explosion damaged a residential home where the bomb-laden car was parked, but that fire service officials  put out the fire quickly to prevent further damage.

Police spokesperson in Plateau state, Felicia Anslem, said only one life was lost in the explosion while 2 others were injured. Mrs. Anslem called for calm, saying security officials have cordoned the area of the blast.

UPDATES: Jos Explosion casualty ‘massive’ – NEMA

The two blasts that hit Jos Terminus Market today in Nigeria’s central city of Jos reportedly killed over 200 people .
According to the reports from Plateau state , the two bombs were concealed inside a truck and a minibus the military said. “There were two separate blasts,” at the New Abuja Market, Pam Ayuba said, referring to the attack at about 3:00 pm (1400 GMT). “We are yet to know the casualty rate,” he added.

“The first IED (improvised explosive device) was in a truck. The second was in a minibus,” said Kingsley Egbo, of the military State Task Force (STF) in Plateau state, of which Jos is the capital.

“The market was really crowded,” he added. “We are having a problem of crowd control… The emergency services have evacuated the casualties,” he told AFP.

Defence Headquarters (DHQ) says no attack on Maiduguri metropolis as widely reported today

Defense Headquarters has refuted reports in the media that terrorists launched an attack on Maiduguri this morning, May 3, 2014.

In a statement signed by Major General Chris Olukolade released to the media today, May 3, 2014, the Nigerian military said that troops received a distress call in the early hours of the morning and launched a counter attack using mortar shells on a group of terrorists.

The statement reads:

There was no attack on Maiduguri metropolis as widely reported this morning by some media outlets especially a foreign television channel.  Rather, on receiving distress call, troops at about 2am this morning launched a counter attack using mainly mortar shells on a group of terrorists who had attacked and killed four persons in Margimari village and other settlements in the outskirts of Maiduguri.  There was no fighting or attack around the University or any barrack in Maiduguri either, as reported.

Former Deputy Senate President, John Wash Pam Dies at 73

Nigeria's Former Deputy Senate President, John Wash Pam, is dead.

The Second Republic senator's death was confirmed by his first son, Mr. Ganan Wash Pam and his Special Assistant, Mr. Williams Chieshe (Jnr).

"Baba died about one and half hours ago" Chieshe said. "He has been battling with prostrate cancer for a while now".

Pam, who hails from Foron district of Barakin Ladi local Government Area of Plateau State, was a prominent Berom elder before his death. 

Pam, who was the deputy senate president to senator Joseph Wayas from 1979 to 1983, survived by two wives and 18 children.

Cholera Outbreak in Plateau state claims six lives, 113 Hospitalised

The reported cases of fresh cholera outbreak in Bassa and Jos North local government areas of Plateau State has claimed six live while another 113 others hospitalised in the state.

The two days old disease has four of its victims killed in Rukuba/Bassa and two in Jos metropolis. The case in Jos North involved a 61-year-old caterer who was said to have complained of stooling and vomiting, symptoms peculiar to cholera, was taken to the hospital and died on Wednesday morning.

The Deputy Director, Epidemiology in the state Ministry of Health and state epidemiologist, Dr. Raymond Juryit, who confirmed the incidents, the case in Jos metropolis involved a family.

According to him, a woman was sick of diarrhoea and was admitted in the hospital and she died the following day. In the course of preparing food for the funeral, some members of the family developed the same symptoms. We cannot conclude now that it is cholera because we have taken the samples and those with the symptoms have been admitted at Plateau Specialist Hospital. The samples were being analysed, but we cannot wait for the result before we start treating them. We are suspecting cholera and have put them on that routine, but the full confirmation will come with the results."

A report from Jos, the Plateau state capital indicates that the Governor of the state, Dr. Jonah David Jang is being targeted by the Islamist Boko Haram terrorist group.

The report also has it that a State House of Assembly member, Daniel Dem, is also being trailed by Islamist terrorits, allegedly on the orders of the group’s leader, Sheikh Abubakar Mohammed Shekau. 

Anti-Riot policeman rapes four-year-old girl in Plateau

Anti-riot policeman attached to the Special Task Force in Jos, Plateau State was on Wednesday arrested for raping a four-year-old girl. The girl, simply identified as Helen, was allegedly raped by the policeman said to be a 32-year-old corporal, serving with the STF at Rapum in Kassa area of Barakin Ladi Local Government area.

The little girl was first treated for bleeding at the Barakin Ladi General Hospital and discharged, but by the following morning, the bleeding became so severe that she was rushed back to the hospital.

2 die, 50 houses razed in Plateau communal clash

Two persons were on Tuesday confirmed dead and several wounded in a communal clash at a border between Pankshin and Kanke Local Government Areas of Plateau State.

The Chairman of Pankshin Local Government, Mr Samuel Goar, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria in Pankshin. He said the clash was between Ngas and Pai people in Shiwer community of Pankshin LG and Dokpai community in Kanke council.

The chairman said mostly affected areas in the crisis were Piri, Tigiya and Irnet villages within the Shiwer and Dokpai districts. He said it took the intervention of the security operatives and management of the two councils to stop the clash.

Plateau communal clash: One killed, nine houses razed to the ground

One person was killed and nine houses razed on Wednesday in a communal clash between Shiwer in Kanke and their neigbhours, Pai communities in Pankshin local government areas of Plateau state. One person is said to be still missing.

The two communities have been at loggerheads for over a decade over ancestral lands and there are fears that this might develop into a full fledged war if not checked. Shiwer Community Development Association, at a press briefing in Jos on Thursday said recently, some armed youths from Pai went to Jingling village in Shiwer to cut timber. When the youths from Jingling asked them why, the youths from Pai was said to have attacked them, killing one in the process.
