NINE KEY MILESTONES IN PRESIDENT BUHARI'S FIRST YEAR BY GARBA SHEHU

Twelve months ago, President Muhammadu Buhari was sworn in as the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He came to power following the decisive victory of his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC over the ruling People’s Democratic Party, PDP and its candidate, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. The victory ended the 16-year reign of the PDP.

President Buhari campaigned on a promise to fight Boko Haram terrorism and secure the whole country, fight corruption and develop the economy to the point that it creates jobs for the teeming unemployed.

WHY I WILL RECONTEST IN 2019 — GOODLUCK JONATHAN

Former president Goodluck Jonathan has declared his interest to run for presidency in 2019 in Bayelsa State today. A jubilant crowd erupted as news leaked that the former president would be holding a press briefing this afternoon. In a statement released by his media secretary, the former president said, he has been inundated with calls from famous Nigerians to reconsider and salvage the economy from the current decay under the APC led government.
The statement reads in part: “A while ago I stood at the Eagle Square, to offer myself for election as the President of our beloved country on the platform of our great party; the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). I decided to run for office because of the many troubles our dear country faced. In a hotly contested election, we ‘lost’ the election to the opposition. We would have rejected the election results but decided my personal ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian.

Mr. Peter Ayodele Fayose of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been Governor elect of Ekiti state.

The Returning Officer for the 2014 governorship elections and Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Oye- Ekiti, Professor Isaac Azuzu announced the results of the governorship elections in Ekiti State declaring the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Mr Ayodele Fayose, who was governor of Ekiti State from 29 May 2003 to 16 October 2006, winner of the contest.

My dear fellow members of the All Progressives Congress, I salute you. My name is John Odigie Oyegun and I am highly gratified and honoured to be standing before you tonight as the newly elected National Chairman of our Great Party. I am humbled by the great honour you have conferred on me and the sacred trust you have reposed in me.

And with extreme humility, I accept this responsibility that you have entrusted to me, to lead our Party onto the next phase of its evolution and onwards to the fulfillment of its destined mission as the liberator of the Nigerian people. This is a heavy responsibility, but I assure you it is a responsibility I will not take lightly. I pledge to do my utmost, God being on my side, to justify the faith and confidence you have reposed in me.

Before I go further, I will like to express my deepest sympathies to the Borno State delegation and families of those that lost their lives in the unfortunate accident that occurred on their way to this convention. May God in His infinite mercy rest their souls in perfect peace. I assure all gathered here today and the nation generally that the blood they have shed will not be in vain.

Goodluck Jonathan faces challenge from anti-corruption ex-general By William Wallis in London

Muhammadu Buhari, who could emerge as the main challenger to Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan at next year’s elections, is positioning himself as the strongman needed to root out corruption and roll back the brutal Islamist insurgency tearing at the country.

“We are almost over the cliff,” says the 71-year old former general, who seized power in 1983 and ruled Africa’s most populous nation with authoritarian zeal before being overthrown by rival generals 20 months later.

The coalition he formed last year alongside Bola Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos state and political godfather in Nigeria’s Yoruba-speaking southwest, and Atiku Abubakar, a wealthy former vice-president, will on Friday begin the delicate task of choosing party leaders.

President Jonathan appoints Shekarau, three others as ministers

The Nigeria senate announced the nominees during its plenary session on Wednesday.

The Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, has appointed four new ministers and sent their names to the Senate for confirmation.

One of the new appointees is Ibrahim Shekarau, former governor of Kano State who recently left the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, to join the ruling People’s Democratic Party, PDP.
The other nominees are Abdul Bulama from Yobe State, Adedayo Adeyeye from Ekiti State, and Stephen Oruh from Delta State.

The Senate announced the nominees during its plenary session on Wednesday. They are to be screened at a later date.

Boko Haram: More than State of Emergency urgently Needed - David Mark

The  President of the Nigeria Senate, Senator David Mark has called for a clear, unambiguous and decisive military response from the Government, beyond the imposition of a state of emergency against  the Boko Haram Insurgents in the North-Eastern region of he Country.”

Mark said an urgent military action, beyond the state of emergency must be put in place at the moment to end the war against Boko Haram Islamist Fighters. He made the call in a speech at the resumption of plenary session on Wednesday adding that it is clear Nigeria state is at war with Boko Haram insurgents.

According to him; “The enemy has clearly and unequivocally served the nation notice of its vile intentions and therefore, a clear, unambiguous and decisive military response from the Government, beyond the imposition of a state of emergency, is urgently required in this circumstance.”
