University Of Lagos Campus Shut Down By Students Protesting Tuition Hike |
The ongoing "Tuition fee Increment revolution" in the country's State and Federal Government owned tertiary institutions is perceived to be barbaric, inhumane, undemocratic, terrorising and as well as a decorated insurgency on the people, particularly when it is as high as over 600% like that of the Lagos State University, Lagos. Though, we are convinced that this is targeted at the low income families who go starving in order to be loyal to the State Government by paying their huge taxes and paying the #46,000 initial tuition of each of their children in the University.
A WHY question is rhetoric...
Unarguably, the Nigerian State and economy has tilted with a great inclination towards a theoretical educational based system which has left a lot of people with little or no education but with patency, trademark or copyright for one intellectual property or the other so worried and agitating for better funding of the science and technological sector and promotion of research works which would in return create a fertile soil to grow our failing economy.
We do subscribe to the saying that "Education is expensive but illiteracy is worse and that if Education is expensive people are advised to try Ignorance" but we must also always reiterate that Education is among the basic rights of every person and expected to be provided by the Government at an affordable cost in order to promote the spirit of learning in the people as this is the bedrock of a sustainable growth in a country's economy.
In the spirit of togetherness, peace and one Nigeria, we strongly advocate and agitate for a reversal of the tuition fee from the hiked #350,000 to its initial #46,000 in order to save the future of the country whose picture is very blur at the moment.
