"We want to live peacefully in Russia" - Crimea Russians

Crimea referendum on joining Russia to be held March 16

About 50 people on Thursday morning rallied outside the local parliament in Simferopol, Crimea's capital, waving Russian and Crimean flags.

The posters they held was one that said "Russia, defend us from genocide." "We are tired of revolutions, maidans and conflicts and we want to live peacefully in Russia," said one of the bystanders, Igor Urbansky, 35. "Only Russia can give us a peaceful life."

Maidan is the name of the downtown square in Kyiv where tens of thousands of protesters contested the rule of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, who fled to Russia.

Not all in Simferopol favoured the lawmakers' action.

However, Crimean parliament asks to join Russia and plans referendum in 10 days' time on endorsing the move
Also, Crimea's parliament says it has voted to set up new ministries which will become independent of Kiev. These include the ministries of the interior, justice and fuel and energy

Ukraine PM rejects Crimea referendum on joining Russia and has been reportedly ordered for the arrest of both the Crimea PM and parliament speaker.

Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk said on Thursday that a decree making Crimea part of Russia was an illegitimate move and that Crimea was and will remain an integral part of the country.

"This is an illegitimate decision and this so-called referendum has no legal grounds at all. That's the reason why we urge the Russian government not to support those who support separatism in the Ukraine," Yatseniuk told a news conference in Brussels following talks with EU leaders.

He also urged Russia to pull out her troops from Crimea.

Viktor Gordiyenko, 46 said "This is crazy. Crimea has become Putin's puppet,"
"A referendum at gunpoint of Russia weapons is just a decoration for Putin's show. A decision on occupation has already been made." he said.

While Pro-Russian forces remain in control of Crimea, where stand-off continues with Ukrainian troops blockaded in bases; US government imposes visa restrictions on people who "threaten the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine"
