In a statement signed by its National President, Agbaakin Bolu Omodele, the group urged the people of the two states to reflect on the past experiences of the region and learn from them.
“Egbe Omo Yoruba inNorth America is calling on all stakeholders, governments at all levels, the electorate, security forces, political parties and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to join hands and ensure we have a free and fair election and promote democratic ethos.
“We counsel that political gladiators and their supporters should eschew do-or-die politics but rather be conscious that the interests and well-being of our people should be paramount. To the electorate, there is an urgent need to be alive to our duties and responsibilities as citizens, so that we can protect our democracy and nurture our democratic institutions.”
“We should be vigilant and not mortgage the future of our children for short-lived pecuniary gains; rather, we should vote for people with track records and who identify with our legitimate aspirations and also hold them accountable at all times.
Our participatory democracy should be based on identifiable party philosophy, realistic deliverables and government that lifts people out of economic doldrums to individual and sustainable communal development,” the statement read in part.
The group called on the electoral umpire to take all necessary steps in ensuring that the Ekiti and Osun states governorship elections, ‘are conducted mindful of the integrity of the process’, while also urging the security agencies ‘to provide adequate security for the safety of INEC officials and election materials and maintain law and order in the two states before, during and after the elections’.
