Nearly twenty persons have been gruesomely murdered after gunmen attacked two communities in Ahoada East local government area of Rivers state on Saturday night (30/4/16) leaving trails of savagery in their path.
We gathered that some heavily armed men led by a notorious cult leader invaded Edoha community killing and beheading a certain herbalist, Iwuoma Ichocho and four others who were with him. Community sources say the gunmen attacked when they got wind that the native healer was extracting bullets from some persons believed to be members of a rival cult group who may have sustained injuries from an earlier gun battle. The home of the herbalist was burnt down with the bodies of the victims while their decapitated heads were used to adorn major road junctions in the community.
As the people of Edoha community were struggling to come to terms with the unexplainable level of barbarity which had unfolded in their hometown, little did they know that a greater volume of carnage was unfolding Olapata, a nearby community also in the Ahoada East LGA. Assailants believed to be cultists on a revenge mission reportedly raided Olapata Community shooting unchallenged for more than an hour. As the deafening sounds of rapid gunfire waned, eleven persons lay still in the pool of their own blood.
Though Governor Wike has continued to insist that his state is peaceful, gory images of headless victims of ISI styled murders punctuated every now and then with tales of incessant kidnappings, rape and robbery appears to have dampened the image of the “Treasure Base of Nigeria”. A few months ago, Olapata community had suffered a similar incidence with about the same number of casualties. Recall that Dr Vincent Eebe, a lecturer at the state’s Ken Saro Wiwa Polytechnic and a female passenger in his car were killed by a spray of bullets from the guns of the notorious and enigmatic gunmen a fortnight ago . The state police command continues to parade suspects arrested with large cache of assault rifles and ammunition from various locations across the state, yet the menace has continued unabated.
