FACT __ Aside Lagos State, not more than 2 or 3 States out of 36 are currently paying the present #18,000 minimum wage in Nigeria without owing workers for several months and PENSIONERS for up to a year.
The call for #56,000 minimum wage by the Labour Union was made in an absolutely wrong time. It portrays the leadership of the Labour as being insensitive to the plight which the rest of the Nigerian masses are undergoing. Are we expecting States and FG to use our common resources to service just the workers at the detriment of other infrastructure and other palliative measure that will ameliorate the current economic impasse which we find ourselves ?
Of course, wage increment should be reviewed from time to time. But did Labour ever thought about the possible outcome of such increment in a time like this ?
How did you think the farmers , market women and artisans will react to such increment from the angle of the good and services they render to the masses? Visible increament & who suffers this ? The rest of us.
For those that still doesn't get it, increase minimum wage without revatalising the economy to protect other small scales business, the price of pure water will surely shoot up to #30 or so amidst many other would be increased services.
You think my posit is wrong ? Analyze this, in an interview with Channels Television, the NLC Acting Secretary General, Chris said " All the states have to do { to be able to pay & maintain #56,000 minimum wage } is to look at inwardly at their Internally Generated Revenue". By implication , drive the masses hard to generate revenue inorder to pay the workers. And after the workers collect the market women & artisans hard earned payed tax, how do you think they will react ? Increase their services.
RATHER , I think NLC should firstly join the rest of us to fight and achieve ;
*Demand for downward review NASS Salaries and emolument.
*Join hand with FG to ensure an all holistic and sincere fight against corruption that leaves behind no politician or Govt appointees.
*Ensure adequate supply of electricity rather than this epileptic supply Nigerians are being made to even pay more for.
*Insist on good road network project vis a vis other infrastructures that will make our livelihood more secure and safe.
*And more importantly as a Nation ensure FG support Local Production and support SME as a panacea to revatalising the economy.
Then and only then, we will discover that the true answer to the labour agitation for better leaving condition for her members is in achieving better life for all and not sectional wage increment that will surely bounce back.
