Human Rights Agenda Network (HRAN) joins other Rights Groups in Abuja today the 6th of May, 2014, in a protest march to the Ministry of Defense; demanding for immediate release of the abducted school girls in Chibok, Borno State. HRAN also demands for accountability from the military, the Federal Government and Borno State Government on how they handled the security situation in the State, which led to the exposure of these young school girls. HRAN also believes that the State Education Board and West African Examination Council have not displayed enough level of responsibility by allowing the abducted girls to remain in the remote part of the Borno, knowing the security situation in the State.
HARN believes that a protest march signifies the solidarity of a people in a cause and hopes that the Federal Government and the Ministry of Defense will heed to the voice of the masses and explore more practical and credible means of rescuing the abducted girls. HRAN believes that the rescue of the school girls is and should be (if not yet) paramount in the agenda of every agency of the government, and will be weighing the value placed on the lives of Nigerians by this government, with the instant case.
HRAN condemns the fact-finding committee set up by the federal government to look into the circumstances surrounding the abduction of the school girls, noting that a more practical and proactive steps are needed to rescue the abducted girls and not a committee. HRAN once again condemns the politics and ethnicity being played with the situation, hoping that all political parties, ethnic groups and government agencies should join hands together to ensure that the girls are rescued before an irreversible situation emerges.
As we march on to the ministry of defense by 2 pm today, we hope that the government will not harden its hearts, and that we will all live to tell the story of the abducted girls without tears.
Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria and May God Preserve our Girls.
