Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, who is the Chairman of Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF), has urged Nigerians to stop tying the increase in the activities of the Boko Haram sect to people not wanting President Goodluck Jonathan in power.
Aliyu, who is also the governor of Niger State, added that the activities of the sect started long before the President came into power. According to him, Nigerians need to bury this conspiracy theory making rounds, and focus on crushing the activities of the sect totally.
Aliyu, who stated this at the 2014 national conference of Directors of Planning, Research and Statistics in the public Service in Minna, Niger State, yesterday insisted that the conspiracy theory against President Jonathan must end.
“Don’t tie Boko Haram to people not wanting President Jonathan in power, Boko Haram started long before President Jonathan became the Vice President. It started in Yobe in the 1990s.
“Boko Haram emerged when some politicians decided to use thugs to gain power. They entered into agreement with these people that could not be fulfilled.
“This was what increased the sect activities. We need to stop saying that it is because of the President that Boko Haram came to stay.
“Even if it was, we should have known those who are sponsoring the activities of the sect by today rather than spreading these conspiracy theories.”
Aliyu added that contrary to what people think, the North is not using Boko Haram against President Jonathan.
He stressed that whoever does not want President Jonathan in power can go on exile and return after he finishes his tenure as the President.
“Nobody can stop what God has ordained. If God says President Jonathan would continue, he would be President. Anyone that does not want it can go on exile and return when he finishes his tenure.”
He lamented that the country has faced five years of increased onslaught of the sect activities which have affected the economy of the three states mostly affected by the activities of the sect and the north in general.
He said despite all these, the Gross Domestic Product of the country have increased from being the 36th to the 26th and first in Africa.
Earlier, the overseeing Minister of National Planning, Ambassador Bashir Yuguda, had said that after the rebasing of the nation’s economy, the Ministry has begun the rebasing of the economies of the 36 states of the federation and Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.
