My about-to-expire Nigerian passport - Kaduna experience

So I decided to renew my about-to-expire Nigerian passport in Kaduna, believing that the NIS passport office there would be less crowded and thus more efficient than the one in Abuja. I had previously taken advantage of visits to Nigeria to renew my passport, so I expected this to be routine. Boy, was I mistaken.

The first day was smooth. The NIS folks ushered me in, gave me a spot to park, and one of them accompanied me to the right office where I submitted my old passport, paid the N24,000 fee they demanded (I simply obliged as I didn't know the prevailing official rate), and supplied the information they requested. They did not even give me a receipt but I didn't want to be fussy or tick them off.

The NIS officer who accompanied me then asked me to expect his call later in the day when they would be ready for me to come back for the biometric capture. Sure enough he called around 3:30 pm and I immediately headed back to the passport office and got my biometric data taken after a brief wait.

Buhari and The State Of The Nation (I)

I sat with him over a cup of coffee in my house last Monday before I left Nigeria. I started pressuring him to talk to me on phone a month after his appointment. He declined. He was confident my phone must have been tapped long ago. So I waited. That meeting was long overdue because he holds a sensitive position in government and I have always wanted to discuss the state of the nation as I see it from the eyes of the average Nigerian with him. I wanted him to corroborate or refute some information I have. He did corroborate all my priors with the exception of Mallami on Saraki! Here is what I know.

STATEMENT BY ACTING PRESIDENT, PROFESSOR YEMI OSINBAJO, SAN, GCON ON THE OCCASION OF INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

On International Women’s Day, I would like to, on behalf of the President, government and people of Nigeria, recognise and appreciate the very valuable work done, and role played by women in our country, over the years, since the struggle for independence.

We acknowledge and value the contributions women are making to national development. They do this daily working within and outside the home as well as in public life. Indeed they sometimes are the sole providers for their families.

International Women's Day: Women Committee of the United Labour Congress (ULC) March in Lagos

Women Committee of the United Labour Congress (ULC)
International Women's Day march organized by the women committee of the United Labour Congress (ULC) in pictures below.
The boisterous and lively march took off from NUPENG secretariat at Jibowu Yaba and ended at the NUEE Secretariat at Herbert Macaulay way.

My take away from the march, which was more of a carnival, was ULC president Joe Ajaero's response to women's demand for a female president by 2019. According to him, while this is desirable however charity must begin at home. Even in d unions dat are expected to stand for women, women are relegated to the background such that female-dominated unions like the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) and the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) have never produced female union presidents.

XENOPHOBIC ATTACKS BY THE PEOPLE OF SOUTH AFRICA, AGAINST OUR NIGERIAN COMPATRIOTS, DWELLING IN THEIR COUNTRY...

OUR HONEST VIEW ON THE FEEBLE ACTIONS BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OF NIGERIA.

Good day our esteemed friends on the new media. The editorial crew of Kwara Hero had to quickly organise a meeting aimed at making a statement on the above subject. Oluwasesan is a friend of Chief Editor of Kwara Hero, who recently returned from South Africa. This was after he luckily escaped the Xenophobic attack that was launched by citizens of South Africa against the area he was staying, an area called as Nigeria Ville, because it is dominated by Nigerians.

Today, the area is completely devastated, as all shops burnt and completely destroyed. One wonder, is this the same South Africa Late Nigerian Head of State, General Muritala Ramat Muhammed openly castigated the Apartheid Regime for? Are these the same Black South Africans, our African brothers and sisters, which we supported to the extent that Pieter Botha, the then President of the Apartheid Regime, decided to list Nigeria as one of the frontline States they were going to attack in case of an all out war!
